List Of National Libraries
A national library is established by the government of a nation to serve as the pre-eminent repository of information for that country. Unlike public libraries, they rarely allow citizens to borrow books. Often, they include numerous rare, valuable, or significant works; such as the Gutenberg Bible. National libraries are usually notable for their size, compared to that of other libraries in the same country. Some national libraries may be thematic or specialized in some specific domains, beside or in replacement of the 'main' national library. The National Library of Albania ( al, Biblioteka Kombëtare e Shqipërisë) is an Albanian national library headquartered in the capital, Tirana. It was founded in 1920 and inaugurated on December 10, 1922. History The Library Commission of Albania began planning the National Library of Albania (NLA) as early as 1917 before its creation on July 10, 1920. The NLA is the primary national cultural institution and the oldest in the Albanian State. By the end of World War II, the NLA was housed in multiple locations across Albania. In 1966, it was relocated to its current place in Tirana. Between 1917 and 1995, the collections grew from 3,000 to nearly 1 million items. The Antigua Public Library is the national library of Antigua and Barbuda, located in St. John's, Antigua and Barbuda. History The Public Library was founded in 1830 as a private venture. According to a 1932 report, the aim was the "gradual formation of a permanent library of general literature, and an associated reading room". Soon an act of parliament established the Antigua Library Society changing the library's status to that of a corporation. In 1843 an earthquake partially destroyed the library and its proprietors' private properties leading to their ruin. The government assumed ownership in 1854 transferring management to local trustees whose powers increased in 1871. The Andorra National Library ( ca, Biblioteca Nacional d'Andorra) was founded in 1930, then re-opened in 1974. Since 2020, it is housed in the former Hotel Rosaleda in Encamp. Amongst other functions, it is the legal deposit and copyright library for Andorra.
