Leonard George Holden Huxley
Sir Leonard George Holden Huxley (29 May 1902 – 4 September 1988) was an Australian physicist. Huxley was born in London, the eldest son of George Hamborough and Lilian Huxley. He was a second-cousin once removed of Thomas Huxley. His family migrated from England to Australia in 1905 when he was three, and settled in Tasmania, where Huxley showed great academic and sporting promise while attending The Hutchins School. He won a Rhodes Scholarship to New College, Oxford while in his second year at the University of Tasmania and obtained a D.Phil. from Oxford in 1928. John Crawford (economist)
Sir John Grenfell Crawford (4 April 1910 – 28 October 1984) was an agricultural economist and a key architect of Australia's post-war growth. Early life, education and family Born in Hurstville, Sydney, Crawford was the tenth of twelve children of Henry Crawford and Harriet Isabel Crawford, née Wood. Crawford was educated at Sydney Boys High School and the University of Sydney. Crawford married Jessie Morgan on 18 May 1935 and together they had a daughter. Career In 1941 Crawford helped to create the Agricultural Economics Section of the New South Wales Government's Department of Agriculture. Leslie Melville
Sir Leslie Galfreid Melville (26 March 190230 April 2002) was a renowned Australian economist, academic and public servant. He helped form Australia's central banking system and gave his voice in international economic forums in the years following World War II. He also played an important role in the early years of the Australian National University, serving as its Vice-Chancellor between 1953 and 1960. Early years and background Leslie Melville was born in Sydney in 1902. His father Richard Ernest Melville was of Irish stock, and his mother Lillian Evelyn née Thatcher had English forebears. During World War I, his father lost his job as a bank manager and then invested in a project that failed, bringing the family into severe financial difficulty. The Australian Academy of Science was founded in 1954 by a group of distinguished Australians, including Australian Fellows of the Royal Society of London. The first president was Sir Mark Oliphant.
