Lower Simcoe Street Underpass Murals
Murals were unveiled along the Lower Simcoe Street underpass in Toronto, Ontario, in 2019. Lead artist Tannis Nielsen worked with Indigenous artists to create the artworks. According to '' Muskrat Magazine'', ''Gchi-twaa-wendan Nibi'' ("Honour the Water") on the eastern wall is dedicated to the Water Walkers, and '''N' gekaajig kidowog'' ("My Elders Said") on the western wall commemorates elders in Toronto. ''Daily Hive'', formerly known as ''Vancity Buzz'', is a Canadian online newspaper based in Vancouver, British Columbia. It began digital publishing in 2008 and became Western Canada's largest online-only publication by 2016. In September 2022, ZoomerMedia announced a deal to acquire ''Daily Hive'' for $16.4 million. History The site began its publishing in 2008 under the name ''Vancity Buzz'' and was founded by Manny Bahia and Karm Sumal. The name was changed to ''Daily Hive'' in 2016 when the company expanded nationally. Concurrently with its rebranding as ''Daily Hive'', the publication expanded to Toronto and Montreal. In November 2017, ''Daily Hive'' deleted many of their posts on their official Instagram account as a form of viral marketing, inspired by Taylor Swift's similar publicity stunt earlier in the year. ''Muskrat Magazine'' is an online Indigenous literary, art, and culture publication, published in Toronto. It includes profiles of Indigenous peoples engaged in the arts including literature, film, music, and visual and performing arts. The publication's name was inspired by the central role of the muskrat in a creation story re-told by Anishnabe storyteller Basil H. Johnston ( Wasauksing Ojibway) in his work ''Ojibway Heritage''. Simcoe Street Tunnel
The Simcoe Street tunnel is located between Front Street and Bremner Blvd. in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This tunnel is situated in a densely urban site below the SkyWalk and in close proximity to Toronto Union Station and the InterContinental Toronto Centre hotel. The tunnel roof structure is designed to carry all 16 pre-existing railway tracks. The ground structure provides one vehicle lane north bound and two lanes south bound, one bicycle lane and one extra wide pedestrian sidewalk on each side of the tunnel. The Simcoe Street tunnel was officially opened on September 22, 2009 by Councillor Adam Vaughan. Construction Construction of the tunnel began in late 2006 and was carried out in stages.
