A trade union (British English) or labor union (American English), often simply referred to as a union, is an organization of workers whose purpose is to maintain or improve the conditions of their employment, such as attaining better wages and Employee benefits, benefits, improving Work (human activity), working conditions, improving safety standards, establishing complaint procedures, developing rules governing status of employees (rules governing promotions, just-cause conditions for termination) and protecting and increasing the bargaining power of workers. May Jordan McConnel
Mary Emma Jordan McConnel (6 September 1860 – 28 April 1929) was an Australian trade unionist and suffragist. She was the first paid female trade union organiser in Queensland. Life McConnel née Jordan was born on 6 September 1860 at George Street, Brisbane, the daughter of politician Henry Jordan and his wife, Elizabeth (née Turner). She trained as a teacher and nurse. She was secretary of the Tailoresses' Union, was heavily involved in the formation of the Brisbane Women's Union, treasurer of the Women's Equal Franchise Association, and inaugural general secretary of the women's section of the Australian Labour Federation. It was for the Labour Federation that she would begin working for as an organiser in 1890. In March 1890, she became engaged to David Rose McConnel of Cressbook Station (first Director of the Central Technical College in Brisbane). Mary Windeyer
Lady Mary Elizabeth Windeyer (28 September 1836 – 3 December 1912) was an Australian women's rights campaigner, particularly in relation to women's suffrage in New South Wales, a philanthropist and charity organizer. Mary was born on 28 September 1836, at Hove in Sussex, England, one of eleven children of the Reverend Robert Thorley Bolton and Jane Martha Ball. On 8 April 1839 the Rev Bolton, his wife and six children, including Mary, left Plymouth, England on the barque Strathfieldsaye, arriving in Sydney, New South Wales on 25 July 1839, and the family moved to Hexham, New South Wales where Rev Bolton was the minister at St Stephen's church. In 1863 Rev Bolton was held to be the father of an illegitimate son. On 31 December 1857 Mary married William Charles Windeyer, then a barrister and law reporter for the Empire (newspaper), Empire.
