Katarine Zalyan-Manukian
Katarine Zalyan-Manukyan (died 1965) was an Armenian politician. In 1919 she was elected to parliament, becoming one of the first three female MPs in the country. Biography Zalyan-Manukyan was a nurse and worked at orphanages. She married Aram Manukian, Aram Manukyan in 1917 had a daughter named Seda the following year. Manukyan was one of the founders of the First Republic of Armenia and became its first Minister of Internal Affairs in 1918. In the same year Katarine coordinated nursing volunteers at the Battle of Abaran and Battle of Sardarabad, Sardarabad. Her husband died in January 1919 after contracting typhus. Perchuhi Partizpanyan-Barseghyan
Perchuhi Partizpanyan-Barseghyan ( hy, Պերճուհի Պարտիզպանյան-Բարսեղյան, 1886 – 18 May 1940) was an Armenian pedagog, writer and humanitarian worker. She was one of the first three women elected to serve as a member of the parliament with the formation of the First Republic of Armenia in 1919. After the fall of the republic, she briefly relocated to Bulgaria, before continuing her literary career in Paris. She received recognition for her short stories from the American anthologist, Edward J. O'Brien. She worked in the Nansen International Office for Refugees in Paris trying to assist Armenians who had been effected by the Armenian genocide. 1919 Armenian Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Armenia between 21 and 23 June 1919. The electoral system used was party-list proportional representation using the D'Hondt method in one national district.Dieter Nohlen, Florian Grotz & Christof Hartmann (2001) ''Elections in Asia: A data handbook, Volume I'', p329 The result was a landslide victory for the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) which won 72 of the 80 seats. However the election was boycotted by the Hunchaks and Populists. Voter turnout was 71.2%. The first republic ended when the country taken over by the Soviet Union the following year and multi-party elections were not held again until 1995. The ARF originally won 73 seats, but one seat was apparently assigned later to the Muslim faction, reducing the party's seat total to 72. The Battle of Sardarabad ( hy, Սարդարապատի ճակատամարտ, translit=Sardarapati chakatamart; tr, Serdarabad Muharebesi) was a battle of the Caucasus campaign of World War I that took place near Sardarabad, Armenia, from 21 to 29 May 1918, between the regular Armenian military units and militia on one side and the Ottoman army that had invaded Eastern Armenia on the other.
