Joint Operations Command (Italy)
The Joint Operations Headquarters ( it, Comando Operativo di Vertice Interforze, COVI) is the Italian joint operational command directly reporting to the Chief of the Defence Staff. This command exercises the planning, coordination and direction of the military operations of the Italian armed forces, and on joint and multinational exercises and all activities connected to them. Through the COVI, the Chief of the Defence Staff is able to exercise his functions as Operational Commander of the Armed Forces. History The Joint Operations Headquarters was established in 1998 in order to provide the Chief of the Defence Staff of the means to direct the whole operational activity of the Italian Armed Forces. Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone is an Italian naval officer, currently serving as Chief of the Defense Staff since 19 October 2021. Prior to his assumption, he served as the Chief of Staff of the Italian Navy from 21 June 2019 to 19 October 2021, and as commander of the Joint Operations Command, and the Joint Special Forces Operations Headquarters. Early life and education Dragone was born in Arquata Scrivia on 28 February 1957. He entered the Italian Naval Academy in Livorno in 1976 and graduated from his class in 1980. The Joint Special Forces Operations Headquarters ( it, Comando interforze per le operazioni delle forze speciali, COFS) is the joint command of the Italian Armed Forces charged with overseeing the various special operations units of the Italian Armed Forces. The command is part of the Joint Operations Command and is validated as NATO Component Command. COFS is headquartered at Centocelle Airport in Rome, Italy. Luciano Portolano
Lieutenant General Luciano Portolano is the Chief of Staff of the Allied Joint Force Command Naples. Biographical Information Lieutenant General Portolano joined the Italian army in September 1981. Before joining the United Nations, he served as Deputy Chief of Staff for Joint Operations in the Italian army. He also held the positions of Commander of the Sassari Mechanized Brigade and Commander of the International Security Assistance Force.
