John Sharpe (tennis)
John Sharpe (born 18 May 1939) is an Australian born Canadian former professional tennis player. Born in Melbourne, Sharpe featured in the main draw of all four grand slam tournaments while touring as an Australian in the early 1960s. His best performance came at the 1961 U.S. National Championships, where he made it through to the fourth round. Sharpe studied in the United States at Pan American College, Texas and was a member of their collegiate tennis team. Around 1965 he moved to Toronto for work and in 1968 became eligible to play for his adoptive country. During this period he was also studying to be a stockbroker and was largely absent from the international tour. In 1969 he began touring again as a member of the Canada Davis Cup team, appearing in a total of five ties in three years. Canada Davis Cup Team
The Canada men's national tennis team represents Canada in Davis Cup tennis competition since 1913. They are overseen by Tennis Canada, the governing body of tennis in Canada. The team won their first Davis Cup in 2022, beating Australia 2-0 in the final. In its first appearance in 1913 it had reached the World Group final, losing to the United States 0–3. History 1913–2010: Moderate success Canada competed in its first Davis Cup in 1913. The team won its first tie, played in June at the Queen's Club, London over South Africa by a score of 4–1. The team consisted of just two players, Robert Powell and Bernard Schwengers. Canada then in July easily defeated Belgium in the semi-finals 4–0. Brian Fairlie (born 13 June 1948), is a retired tennis player from New Zealand. During his career from 1968 to 1979, he won four titles in doubles, all with the Egyptian player Ismail El Shafei, and 10 singles titles in the Open era (and at least two more in 1967). Playing career Juniors Fairlie was the 1967 Boys' Singles champion of the Australian Championships. Professional Failie's best result in a Grand Slam was reaching the semi-finals of men's doubles at the French Open in 1971 with partner Frew McMillan. A year earlier, he reached the singles quarterfinals of the U.S. Open, losing to Tony Roche. While his highest ATP singles ranking was World No. 24 (in September 1973), Fairlie was ranked inside the world's Top 20 in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Onny Parun
Onny Parun (born 15 April 1947) is a former tennis player of Croatian descent from New Zealand, who was among the world's top 20 for five years and who reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon in 1971 and 1972. He made the final of the Australian Open in 1973, losing to John Newcombe in four sets, and was a US Open quarterfinalist in 1973 and also a quarterfinalist at the French Open in 1975. He eventually went on to coach the Bhatti brothers. Parun and Australian Dick Crealy won the French Open doubles title in 1974. He also made the Masters in 1974, qualifying by finishing in the top eight on the grand prix table.
