Joe Frans
Joseph Mark Frans (born July 1, 1975 in Grimsby, Ontario) is a Canadian curler from Guelph, Ontario. Frans is most notable for being a two-time provincial champion and for being suspended from competitive curling for cocaine usage. Career Frans obtained fame as a curler in 1991, when he won the provincial school boys championship and the provincial junior mixed championship while curling in Smiths Falls, Ontario. In 1993, Frans won the provincial junior championship while playing in St. Catharines, Ontario. At the 1993 Canadian Junior Curling Championships, his team would finish with a 6-5 record. In 1994, Frans would win a second straight provincial championship, this time with Bradford, Ontario. At the 1994 Canadian Junior Curling Championships, he skipped the Ontario team to a 4th place finish (7-4 record), just out of the playoffs. Grimsby, Ontario
Grimsby is a town on Lake Ontario in the Niagara Region, Ontario, Canada. Grimsby is at the eastern end of the Hamilton Census Metropolitan Area. It is named after the English fishing town of Grimsby in north-east Lincolnshire. The majority of residents reside in the area bounded by Lake Ontario and the Niagara Escarpment, home to a section of the Bruce Trail. Grimsby has experienced significant growth over the past two decades due to its position between Hamilton and St. Catharines. Growth is limited by the natural boundaries of Lake Ontario and the Niagara Escarpment. Some residents feel development is detrimental to the town as orchards close to the town centre are used for residential development; however, most of the orchards in Grimsby were replaced by houses between the 1950s and 1980s and very few orchards remain. Canada Cup (curling)
The Canada Cup (branded as the Home Hardware Canada Cup for sponsorship reasons, and also referred to as the Canada Cup of Curling) is a major men's and women's curling championship in Canada. It is organized by Curling Canada and is one of its major events on its "Season of Champions". The event is frequently used as a qualifier for various other events, such as the Canadian Olympic Curling Trials, Pre-Trials and Continental Cup. Since 2013, the Canada Cup is not held during the same curling season as the Winter Olympic Games. Competition history The first event was held in 2003 at the Sport Mart Place in Kamloops, British Columbia, the Cup's home until 2008. Dale Matchett
Dale Matchett (born September 1, 1975 in Newmarket, Ontario) is a Canadian curler from Alliston, Ontario. Matchett is a former provincial junior curling champion and a regular on the World Curling Tour. Career Junior career In his junior career, Matchett qualified for four provincial junior championships (1993, 1994, 1995, 1996), winning in 1994 playing second for Joe Frans. The team would then represent Ontario at the 1994 Canadian Junior Curling Championships, where they finished with a 7-4 record in 4th place. The same year Matchett skipped his Bradford District High School team to the Ontario Schoolboy Championship. Men's career Matchett began his men's career as a skip in the late 1990s. His first World Curling Tour event was the 1998 Shorty Jenkins Classic, where his team of Ryan Werenich, Tim Morrison and Brad Anderson finished 6th. The 2010 Ontario Men's Curling Championship was held February 1-7th, 2010 at the Strathcona Paper Centre in Napanee. Eleven teams participated. It marked the first year that the defending champion (Glenn Howard's rink) would get an automatic berth. Winner Glenn Howard went on to represent Ontario at the 2010 Tim Hortons Brier in Halifax, Nova Scotia, losing in the final to Kevin Koe's Alberta rink. Peter J. Corner2017 Brier Media Guide: Previous Rosters (born May 20, 1968 in Brampton, Ontario) is a Canadian curler from Burlington, Ontario. Career Corner was a member of the 1993 "dream team" of his cousin Wayne Middaugh and the brothers of Glenn and Russ Howard. Corner played lead for the team. All four players would skip teams to provincial championships in the future. In 1993, the team won the Brier and World Championship. Corner played in his first national championships at the 1987 Canadian Junior Curling Championships playing third for Middaugh. The team lost in the final to New Brunswick's Jim Sullivan. Corner joined forces with the Howards in 1990, and qualified for their first Brier in 1991. However, at the 1991 Labatt Brier, the team missed the playoffs with a 6-5 record.
