James A. Smart
James Allan Smart (June 6, 1858 – May 3, 1942) was a hardware merchant and political figure in Manitoba. He represented Brandon East from 1886 to 1888 and Brandon City from 1888 to 1892 in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba as a Liberal. Biography He was born in Brockville, Ontario, the son of James Smart, and was educated at the Canadian Literary Institute in Woodstock. Smart came to Manitoba in 1880 and worked for a hardware firm in Winnipeg until 1881. He then moved to Brandon, where he operated his own hardware business until 1886. In 1883, he married Elizabeth F. Jones. Smart served on Brandon City Council from 1882 to 1883 and was city mayor from 1885 to 1886 and from 1895 to 1896. In 1886, he was named to the Western Judicial District Board of Manitoba. Smart was a member of the provincial cabinet, holding the post of Minister of Public Works and Municipal Commissioner. James Smart (civil Servant)
James Smart (February 29, 1888 – July 21, 1957) was a Canadian civil servant. He was the first superintendent for Riding Mountain National Park and was head of the National Parks Branch from 1941 to 1953. Biography James Smart was born in Brandon, Manitoba, the son of James A. Smart and Elizabeth Jones, and received a degree in forestry from the University of New Brunswick in 1917. Smart married Katherine Amelia Stewart in 1919. He first worked for the Dominion Forest Service and then joined the National Parks Branch in 1930. He served overseas with the Canadian Forestry Corps during World War I. Smart served as Controller of the federal Department of Mines and Resources and as Controller of the National Parks Branch from 1941 until 1950 and as Director of the National Parks Branch from 1950 until he retired from the civil service in 1953. Brandon East
Brandon East is a provincial electoral division in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It encompasses half of the City of Brandon, the other half being represented in Brandon West. Historical riding The original riding of Brandon East existed from 1886 to 1888, when the City and riding of Brandon was divided into two electoral districts for the first time. The city was re-established as a single riding in 1888. Current riding The modern riding of Brandon East was created in 1968, when the City of Brandon was again divided into two separate ridings. It has formally existed since the provincial election of 1969. The riding borders on Brandon West to the west, and by Minnedosa in all other directions.
