Iosif Capotă
Iosif Capotă (January24, 1912September2, 1958) was a physician who, after the Soviet occupation of Romania, became the leader of an anti-communist resistance group in the Mărgău–Huedin area. Capotă was born in the village of Mărgău, Cluj County in a family of Greek-Catholic peasants. He was one of five siblings (along with Ana, Gheorghe, Victor, and Susana) in a family led by Gheorghe and Susana Capotă. He attended the George Barițiu High School in Cluj and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Bucharest, after which he settled in Huedin to practice his specialty. In September 1940, after the annexation of Northern Transylvania by Hungary, he and his family moved to Câmpia Turzii. After returning to Huedin in 1944, he joined the National Peasants' Party and ran for office in the 1946 parliamentary elections, in which a communist-dominated coalition won. Câmpia Turzii
Câmpia Turzii (; german: Jerischmarkt; hu, Aranyosgyéres) is a municipality in Cluj County, Transylvania, Romania, which was formed in 1925 by the union of two villages, Ghiriș (''Aranyosgyéres'') and Sâncrai (''Szentkirály''). It was declared a town in 1950 and a city in 1998. The city is located in the southeastern part of the county, on the right bank of the Arieș River, at a distance of from Turda and from the county seat, Cluj-Napoca. History The village of Sâncrai was mentioned in a 1219 document as "villa Sancti Regis" ("village of Holy King"), while Ghiriș was first documented in 1292 as "Terra Gerusteleke" ("Gerusteleke", literally meaning "plot of Gerus" in Hungarian). Inmates Of Gherla Prison
The Inmates are a British pub rock band, which formed after the split of The Flying Tigers in 1977. In 1982, they had a medium-sized international hit with a cover of The Standells' "Dirty Water", and a UK Top 40 hit with their cover of Jimmy McCracklin's track, " The Walk". "Dirty Water" reached number 51 in the United States in January 1980. The song led directly to them recording their debut album, ''First Offence'', produced by Vic Maile for Radar Records. Gherla Prison
Gherla Prison is a penitentiary located in the Romanian city of Gherla, in Cluj County. The prison dates from 1785; it is infamous for the treatment of its political inmates, especially during the Communist regime. In Romanian slang the generic word for a prison is "gherlǎ", after the institution. History Early years The basic structure came from the fortress of Gherla or "Szamos-uj-var" (equivalent to transliteration from Hungarian, meaning "New castle on the Szamos") built around 1540 by George Martinuzzi, archbishop, cardinal and Imperial Treasurer of the Habsburg Empire. Securitate
The Securitate (, Romanian for ''security'') was the popular term for the Departamentul Securității Statului (Department of State Security), the secret police agency of the Socialist Republic of Romania. Previously, before the communist regime, Romanian secret police was called Siguranța Statului. It was founded on 30 August 1948, with help and direction from the Soviet MGB. Following the overthrow of Nicolae Ceaușescu in 1989, the new authorities assigned the various intelligence tasks of the DSS to new institutions. The Securitate was, in proportion to Romania's population, one of the largest secret police forces in the Eastern bloc. The first budget of the Securitate in 1948 stipulated a number of 4,641 positions, of which 3,549 were filled by February 1949: 64% were workers, 4% peasants, 28% clerks, 2% persons of unspecified origin, and 2% intellectuals.
