Sharpnose Sevengill Shark
The sharpnose sevengill shark (''Heptranchias perlo''), also known as one-finned shark, perlon shark, sevengill cow shark, sharpsnouted sevengill or slender sevengill, is a species of shark in the family Hexanchidae, and the only living species in the genus ''Heptranchias''. Found almost circumglobally in deep water, it is one of the few species of sharks with seven pairs of gill slits as opposed to the usual five. The other shark species with seven gill slits is the broadnose sevengill shark. Though small, this shark is an active, voracious predator of invertebrates and fish. When caught, this species is notably defensive and will attempt to bite. It is of minor commercial importance. Taxonomy The genus name ''Heptranchias'' is from the Greek ''heptra'' meaning "seven arms", and ''agchein'' meaning "throttle", referring to this shark's seven pairs of gill slits. Other common names for this species include one-finned shark, perlon shark, sevengill cow shark, sevengilled Mediterr ...

List Of Prehistoric Cartilaginous Fish Genera
This list of prehistoric cartilaginous fish genera is an attempt to create a comprehensive listing of all Genus, genera that have ever been included in the class chondrichthyes ''and'' are known from the fossil record. This list excludes purely vernacular terms, genera that are now considered invalid, doubtful (nomina dubia), or were not formally published (nomina nuda), as well as junior synonyms of more established names, and genera that are no longer considered to be cartilaginous fish. It includes all commonly accepted genera. This list currently contains 804 generic names. * Extinction, Extinct genera are marked by a dagger (†). * Extant taxon genera are bolded. Naming conventions and terminology Naming conventions and terminology follow the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. Technical terms used include: * Synonym (zoology), Junior synonym: A name which describes the same taxon as a previously published name. If two or more genera are formally designated and t ...

Cow Shark
Cow sharks are a shark family, the Hexanchidae, characterized by an additional pair or pairs of gill slits. Its species are placed within the 11 genera: '' Gladioserratus'', '' Heptranchias'', '' Hexanchus'', ''Notidanodon'', '' Notorynchus'', ''Pachyhexanchus'', ''Paraheptranchias'', ''Pseudonotidanus'', '' Welcommia'', ''Weltonia'', and '' Xampylodon''. Description Cow sharks are considered the most primitive of all the sharks, as their skeletons resemble those of ancient extinct forms, with few modern adaptations. Their excretory and digestive systems are also unspecialized, suggesting they may resemble those of primitive shark ancestors. A possible hexanchid tooth is known from the Permian of Japan, making the family a possible extant survivor of the Permian–Triassic extinction. Their most distinctive feature, however, is the presence of a sixth, and, in two genera, a seventh, gill slit, in contrast to the five found in all other sharks. The first pair are not connected ...

Taxa Named By Constantine Samuel Rafinesque
In biology, a taxon (back-formation from ''taxonomy''; : taxa) is a group of one or more populations of an organism or organisms seen by taxonomists to form a unit. Although neither is required, a taxon is usually known by a particular name and given a particular ranking, especially if and when it is accepted or becomes established. It is very common, however, for taxonomists to remain at odds over what belongs to a taxon and the criteria used for inclusion, especially in the context of rank-based (" Linnaean") nomenclature (much less so under phylogenetic nomenclature). If a taxon is given a formal scientific name, its use is then governed by one of the nomenclature codes specifying which scientific name is correct for a particular grouping. Initial attempts at classifying and ordering organisms (plants and animals) were presumably set forth in prehistoric times by hunter-gatherers, as suggested by the fairly sophisticated folk taxonomies. Much later, Aristotle, and later still ...
