Gaular
Gaular is a former municipality in Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. It was located in the traditional district of Sunnfjord. The administrative centre was the village of Sande. Other villages in the municipality included Bygstad, Hestad, and Vik. Gaular was sometimes referred to as ''Fosselandet'' (the land of the waterfalls) because it was home to 28 large and small waterfalls. The municipality was centered on the river Gaula. The Viksdalen valley was located in Gaular. At the time of its dissolution in 2020, the municipality is the 190th largest by area out of the 422 municipalities in Norway. Gaula (Sogn Og Fjordane)
The Gaula is a river located in the Sunnfjord region of Vestland county, Norway. The long river is the central part of the ''Gaularvassdraget'' watershed basin which covers about across the municipalities of Sunnfjord and Sogndal. The river is a good salmon fishing river. The river runs across the whole municipality of Gaular, and the river is the namesake of the municipality. Course The river begins as glacial runoff in the Gaularfjellet mountains and it runs through the municipalities of Sunnfjord and Sogndal. The glaciers that feed the river are Grovabreen, Jostefonn, and Troget, all three are located just west of the massive Jostedalsbreen glacier. The river starts up in the mountains and empties into a fjord at sea level, and so the water drops over in elevation throughout its course. The village is located along the Gaula River, about from where the river meets the Dalsfjorden. Sande Church is located in this village, serving the people of the central part of the municipality. Førde
Førde is a former municipality in the county of Sogn og Fjordane, Norway. It was located in the traditional district of Sunnfjord. The administrative center was the town of Førde which in 2016 had 10,255 inhabitants. Other villages in Førde municipality included Bruland, Holsen, Moskog, and Haukedalen. The Øyrane area in the town of Førde was a large industrial/commercial area for the region. The European Route E39 highway passed through the municipality, and it passed by the lake Holsavatnet. Sogn Og Fjordane
Sogn og Fjordane (; English: "Sogn and Fjordane") was, up to 1 January 2020, a county in western Norway, when it was merged to become part of Vestland county. Bordering previous counties Møre og Romsdal, Oppland, Buskerud, and Hordaland, the county administration was in the village of Hermansverk in Leikanger municipality. The largest town in the county was Førde. Although Sogn og Fjordane has some industry, predominantly hydroelectricity and aluminium, it is predominantly an agricultural area. Hestad, Sogn Og Fjordane
Hestad is a village in Sunnfjord Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The village is located on the northern shore of the river Gaula (between the lakes Viksdalsvatnet and Hestadfjorden—the river runs through both lakes). The village is located just north of a very small peninsula that is about wide by long. The peninsula juts south into the river, separating the two lakes. The forested peninsula is the site of Hestad Chapel and it has been a church site for centuries. There was originally an old stave church on the site that was built in the 14th century. There is a bridge from the peninsula to the south side of the river, part of the Fv.610 highway. List Of Former Municipalities Of Norway
This is a list of former municipalities of Norway, i.e. municipalities that no longer exist. When the local council system was introduced in Norway in 1837-38, the country had 392 municipalities. In 1958 the number had grown to a total of 744 rural municipalities, 64 city municipalities as well as a small number of small seaports with '' ladested'' status. A committee led by Nikolai Schei, formed in 1946 to examine the situation, proposed hundreds of mergers to reduce the number of municipalities and improve the quality of local administration. Most of the mergers were carried out, albeit to significant popular protest. Fjaler
Fjaler is a municipality in the county of Vestland, Norway. It is located in the traditional district of Sunnfjord. The administrative centre is the village of Dale. Other places in Fjaler include Espedal, Flekke, Folkestad, Guddal, and Hellevika. Fjaler was the birthplace of famous Norwegian poet Jakob Sande. Bygstad
Bygstad is a village in Sunnfjord Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The village is located on the northern shore of the Dalsfjorden, about northwest of the innermost part of the fjord. The municipal center, Sande, is about to the southeast of Bygstad and Førde Airport, Bringeland sits about east of the village. The village is an old church site where there once was a stave church here dating back to the 13th century.
