Fish Creek, Wisconsin
Fish Creek is an unincorporated community located in Door County, Wisconsin, United States, within the town of Gibraltar and is located on Highway 42 along Green Bay. History Fish Creek sits on the site of a Menominee and Ojibwa village known as Ma-go-she-kah-ning, or "trout fishing". The first settler of Fish Creek was Increase Claflin and his family circa 1844, but the village founder is considered to be entrepreneur Asa Thorp. Loggers and fishermen started settling in Fish Creek in 1853. Thorp owned much of the area's land by that year, and built Fish Creek's first dock in 1855. The first post office began in 1866 in the kitchen of John Brown's home. Fish Creek's oldest unchanged residence, the Alexander Noble House, was built in 1875 and today is on the National Register of Historic Places. State Trunk Highway 42 (often called Highway 42, STH-42 or WIS 42) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. It runs for north–south in northeast Wisconsin from Sheboygan to the ferry dock in Northport. Much of the highway is part of the Lake Michigan Circle Tour from the eastern junction with U.S. Highway 10 (US 10) in Manitowoc to its junction with WIS 57 in Sister Bay. Gibraltar Secondary School is a public school in the unincorporated community of Fish Creek, Town of Gibraltar, Door County, Wisconsin, United States. It serves grades 6-12 and is a part of the Gibraltar Area Schools. It used to be known as Gibraltar High School and served grades 9 through 12. It has two schools: Gibraltar Elementary School (K-6) and Gibraltar Secondary School (7-12). Vorous General Store
The Vorous General Store is a historic general store in Fish Creek, Wisconsin. Levi Vorous built the store in 1895; it was the third store to open in Fish Creek. The Commercial Italianate building features a metal cornice with corner brackets and dentils as well as decorative cast iron fixtures, including a beam separating the building's two stories. The store stayed in the Vorous family until 1920, when Levi's widow Rachel sold it to Henry Eckert, Henry Stenzel, and Carl Seiler. In 1932, the store became Fish Creek's post office, a function which it retained until 1959; Seiler served as the first postmaster. Freeman And Jesse Thorp House And Cottages
The Freeman and Jesse Thorp House and Cottages are located in Fish Creek, Wisconsin, United States. In 1997 the site was added to the National Register of Historic Places. History The house was built by Freeman Thorp, nephew of Fish Creek founder Asa Thorp. (Archived May 3, 2017) Upon Freeman's death in a shipwreck, his widow, Jesse, opened the house to lodgers as a way to make money. After closing its doors in the 1960s, the site was renovated in 1986 and was re-opened as a bed and breakfast. Madeline Tourtelot (21 November 1915 – 26 May 2002 ) was an American filmmaker based out of the Chicago metropolitan area. Known for her avant-garde filmmaking style and interest in musical subjects, Tourtelot was a prominent female figure in the Chicago filmmaking community in the 1950s and 60s. She collaborated on films with notable artists such as John Steinbeck, Emilio Fernández, Harry Partch and Edward Bland. Tourtelot founded three artist institutions in the Midwestern United States, and is included in the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. Green Bay (Lake Michigan)
Green Bay is an arm of Lake Michigan, located along the south coast of Michigan's Upper Peninsula and the east coast of Wisconsin. It is separated from the rest of the lake by the Door Peninsula in Wisconsin, the Garden Peninsula in Michigan, and the chain of islands between them, all formed by the Niagara Escarpment.
