Feng Xiaoning
Feng Xiaoning () (born 1954) is a Chinese film director, screenwriter and cinematographer. He is considered a member of the "Fifth Generation" Chinese directors who graduated from the Beijing Film Academy in 1982. Feng however graduated from the Art Direction class. He is currently also a member of Chinese National Political Consultative Conference and Chinese Writers' Association. Feng was born in Xi'an to a family of teachers. He is most famous for his self-dubbed "War and Peace" () trilogy in film – ''Red River Valley'' (1997), ''Lovers' Grief over the Yellow River'' (1999) and ''Purple Sunset ''Purple Sunset'' () is a 2001 Chinese war drama film written and directed by Feng Xiaoning. Xi'an
Xi'an ( , ; ; Chinese: ), frequently spelled as Xian and also known by other names, is the capital of Shaanxi Province. A sub-provincial city on the Guanzhong Plain, the city is the third most populous city in Western China, after Chongqing and Chengdu, as well as the most populous city in Northwest China. Its total population was 12,952,907 as of the 2020 census. The total urban population was 9.28 million. Beijing Film Academy (BFA; ) is a coeducational state-run higher education institution in Beijing, China. The film school is the largest institution specializing in the tertiary education for film and television production in Asia. ''Red River Valley'' () is a 1997 film directed by Feng Xiaoning about the British expedition to Tibet, starring Paul Kersey and Ning Jing. It was also released under the title ''A Tale of the Sacred Mountain''. A book by Peter Fleming, Ian Fleming's brother, is credited in the movie. In 1961, Fleming published ''Bayonets to Lhasa: The First Full Account of the British Invasion of Tibet in 1904''. The film won numerous prizes at China's three main award ceremonies: Huabiao, Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers. Lovers' Grief Over The Yellow River
''Lover's Grief over the Yellow River'' () is a 1999 Chinese film directed by Feng Xiaoning. It was China's official Best Foreign Language Film submission at the 72nd Academy Awards, but did not receive a nomination. Feng considers it the second of his "War and Peace" (战争与和平) trilogy. Plot The plot centers on an American pilot, played by Paul Kersey, who also starred in Feng Xiaoning's 1997 '' Red River Valley'', a film which depicted the British invasion of Tibet in 1905. During the Second Sino-Japanese War the American pilot makes a forced landing near the Great Wall in North China but is taken into the care of the Communist guerilla forces. He meets and falls in love with a young woman fighter who had been raped by the Japanese invaders. The American returns to the Yellow River after the opening of China in the 1980s. ''Purple Sunset'' () is a 2001 Chinese war drama film written and directed by Feng Xiaoning. Feng also acted as the film's cinematographer. ''Purple Sunset'' is an anti-war film set in August 1945, at the time during the Soviet invasion of Manchuria and when the Japanese were in the throes of defeat during World War II and losing control of mainland China. The film won Best Special Effects at the Huabiao Awards and Best Cinematography at the Golden Rooster Award.
