Force 10 From Navarone (novel)
''Force 10 from Navarone'' is a World War II novel by Scottish author Alistair MacLean. It serves as a sequel to MacLean's 1957 '' The Guns of Navarone'', but follows the events of the 1961 film adaptation of the same name. It features various characters from the film who were not in the book, and leaves out major characters from the book. Introduction ''Force 10 From Navarone'' begins immediately after the events portrayed in ''The Guns of Navarone'', with Mallory and Miller assigned on a new mission code-named "Force 10". Mallory and Miller return to Navarone to recruit their comrade Stavros (who stayed behind in the film, but not in the book). They are joined by three young British Royal Marine Commandos, and are parachuted into Nazi-occupied, frozen, war-torn Yugoslavia. There they attempt to aid the Yugoslav Partisans in their battle against the Nazi German occupiers and their Chetnik collaborators. As with all MacLean novels, the true mission is secret. ''Force 10 from Navarone'' is a 1978 war film loosely based on Alistair MacLean's 1968 novel of the same name. It is a sequel to the 1961 film '' The Guns of Navarone''. The parts of Mallory and Miller are played by Robert Shaw (who died before the film was released), and Edward Fox, succeeding in the roles originally portrayed by Gregory Peck and David Niven. It was directed by Guy Hamilton and also stars Harrison Ford, Carl Weathers, Barbara Bach, Franco Nero (in a "plastic surgery" role previously played by Tutte Lemkow), and Richard Kiel. The film gets its title from the Alistair MacLean book of the same name, but bears little resemblance to the narrative of the novel. The differences are so apparent that MacLean would go on to loosely adapt part of the screenplay into his 1982 book '' Partisans''. The Beaufort scale is an empirical measure that relates wind speed to observed conditions at sea or on land. Its full name is the Beaufort wind force scale. History The scale was devised in 1805 by the Irish hydrographer Francis Beaufort (later Rear Admiral), a Royal Navy officer, while serving on . Vango is a Scottish manufacturer of camping equipment. It was founded in 1963 with the acquisition of tent manufacturer James McIlwraith, of Govan, in the West of Scotland, by Alistair Moodie and its name was changed to Vango, an anagram of the placename. Gull Force 10 is a brand of E10, 98 octane fuel marketed by Gull Petroleum in New Zealand, consisting of 10% bioethanol and 90% gasoline. The fuel was the first biofuel product to go on sale in the country, and was launched by Prime Minister Helen Clark on August 1, 2007. The bioethanol is produced by Fonterra from the fermentation of whey, a by-product of New Zealand's large dairy industry. Trials of the fuel have been taking place in New Zealand since 2004, although other countries have been using similar fuels for many years. Paratrooper (ride)
The Paratrooper, also known as the "Parachute Ride" or "Umbrella Ride", is a type of fairground ride. It is a ride where seats suspended below a wheel rotate at an angle. The seats are free to rock sideways and swing out under centrifugal force as the wheel rotates. Invariably, the seats on the Paratrooper ride have a round shaped umbrella or other shaped canopy above the seats. In contrast to modern thrill rides, the Paratrooper is a ride suitable for almost all ages. Most Paratrooper rides require the rider to be at least 36 inches (91.44 cm) tall to be accompanied by an adult, and over 48 inches (121.92 cm) to ride alone. Older Paratrooper rides have a rotating wheel which is permanently raised, which has the disadvantage that riders can only load two at a time as each seat is brought to hang vertically at the lowest point of the wheel.
