Escuminac, New Brunswick
Escuminac (2011 population: 212) is a rural community in Northumberland County, New Brunswick, Canada. The local service district of Escuminac takes its name from the community. Located on the south shore of Miramichi Bay, the community is several kilometres west of Point Escuminac, the southeastern limit of the bay. Canada's largest inshore fishing vessel harbour is home to the local fishing fleet. Industries include two fish processing & freezing plants and a boat building facility. One of Canada's important herring spawning grounds is located beside Point Escuminac. According to Joseph-Étienne Guinard, a missionary and Cree language specialist with some experience with the Mi'kmaq, the word means "here are small fruits". This perfectly describes the area as berries proliferate en masse in this low-lying flat area, and the first colonist were amazed at the amount of Ericaceae. Escuminac Disaster
The 1959 Escuminac disaster (also to referred to as the Escuminac hurricane) was considered the worst fishing-related disaster in New Brunswick in 100 years. It occurred due to the extratropical remnants of an Atlantic hurricane. The storm was the third tropical cyclone and first hurricane of the 1959 Atlantic hurricane season, and developed from a tropical wave in the central Gulf of Mexico on June 18. It headed rapidly northeastward and struck Florida later that day. Shortly after entering the Atlantic Ocean, it strengthened into a tropical storm later on June 18. By the following day, it had strengthened into a hurricane. However, it transitioned into an extratropical cyclone about six hours later. The remnants struck Atlantic Canada, once in Nova Scotia and again in Newfoundland before dissipating on June 21. Bay Du Vin, New Brunswick
Bay du Vin is a small but picturesque unincorporated community located on the south shore of Miramichi Bay, 24 km east of the former town of Chatham (now a part of Miramichi), New Brunswick, Canada. It is suggested that its name comes from a corruption of the French "Baie de Vents" meaning "Bay of Winds" rather than the widely supposed "Bay of Wine" in the literal translation. History The community is reputed to be the oldest European settlement in Northumberland County, New Brunswick, having been established by French settlers from St. Malo, France in 1672. They established their community along the south shore of Miramichi Bay, just east of Gardiners Point. Baie-Sainte-Anne (2011 population: 1,387) is a rural community in Northumberland County, New Brunswick, Canada. It is an acadian community located on the southern shore of Miramichi Bay near its opening into the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Possibly named for Sainte-Anne, patroness of the Micmacs. Northumberland County is located in northeastern New Brunswick, Canada. Geography Northumberland County is covered by thick forests, whose products stimulate the economy. The highest peaks in the province, including Mount Carleton lie in the northwestern corner of the county. The county is dominated by the Miramichi River, world famous for its salmon fishing.
