Escalante Butte
Escalante Butte is a prominence adjacent the far eastern South Rim of the Grand Canyon, of Northern Arizona. Adjacent east is a lower elevation butte, Cardenas Butte. Both buttes, (and the South Rim), are part of the western drainage of north-trending Tanner Canyon into the Colorado River. Geology – Escalante & Cardenas Buttes Escalante Butte and Cardenas Butte lie upon the same Supai Group ridgeline. At the west, Escalante is separated by a ridge saddle (the drainage southeast into Upper Tanner Canyon). Escalante Butte prominence is a small, heavily eroded cliff-former, cliff and debris remainder of Coconino Sandstone, (on debris of Hermit Formation, Hermit Shale), on eroded ridges of the Supai Group. Cardenas Butte, is about lower, east, on an eroded ridgeline of Supai Group. Its small spire is a surviving cliff-former unit of the Supai Group. Escalante Crater is an impact crater in the Amenthes quadrangle of Mars. It is located at 0.2° N and 244.7° W. It is in diameter, and was named after Mexican astronomer (c. 1930) . Escalante, officially the City of Escalante ( ceb, Dakbayan sa Escalante; hil, Dakbanwa sang Escalante; fil, Lungsod ng Escalante), is a 4th class component city in the province of Negros Occidental, Philippines. Escalante National Monument was proposed by Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes in the 1930s as a unit of the U.S. National Park Service in the canyonlands of south central Utah. Centering on the canyons of the Escalante River, the proposed monument encompassed portions of present-day Canyonlands and Capitol Reef national parks, Natural Bridges and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Escalante River
The Escalante River is a tributary of the Colorado River. It is formed by the confluence of Upper Valley and Birch Creeks near the town of Escalante in south-central Utah, and from there flows southeast for approximately before joining Lake Powell. Its watershed includes the high forested slopes of the Aquarius Plateau, the east slope of the Kaiparowits Plateau, and the high desert north of Lake Powell. It was the last river of its size to be discovered in the 48 contiguous U.S. states. The average discharge is approximately 146 cfs (4.1 m³/s). The river was first mapped and named by Almon Thompson, a member of the 1872 Colorado River expedition led by John Wesley Powell. It was named after Silvestre Vélez de Escalante, a Franciscan missionary and the first known European explorer of the region.
