Escalante Butte
Escalante Butte is a prominence adjacent the far eastern South Rim of the Grand Canyon, of Northern Arizona. Adjacent east is a lower elevation butte, Cardenas Butte. Both buttes, (and the South Rim), are part of the western drainage of north-trending Tanner Canyon into the Colorado River. Geology – Escalante & Cardenas Buttes Escalante Butte and Cardenas Butte lie upon the same Supai Group ridgeline. At the west, Escalante is separated by a ridge saddle (the drainage southeast into Upper Tanner Canyon). Escalante Butte prominence is a small, heavily eroded cliff-former, cliff and debris remainder of Coconino Sandstone, (on debris of Hermit Formation, Hermit Shale), on eroded ridges of the Supai Group. Cardenas Butte, is about lower, east, on an eroded ridgeline of Supai Group. Its small spire is a surviving cliff-former unit of the Supai Group. Aubrey Peak Wilderness
The Aubrey Peak Wilderness is a wilderness administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The wilderness is located in northwest Arizona in the southwest of Mohave County, a region of the southeastern Mojave Desert's extension into northwest Arizona. The wilderness is one of two in the Rawhide Mountains, which border the north bank of the west-flowing Bill Williams River. The other wilderness is on both sides of the river, the Rawhide Mountains Wilderness; the section south of the river is in the northeast of the Buckskin Mountains, and the southeast of the Rawhides. The Buckskin Wilderness is on the western border of Alamo Lake, of Alamo Lake State Park. Bright Angel Shale
The Cambrian Bright Angel Shale is the middle layer of the three member Tonto Group geologic feature. The 3-rock Tonto section famously sits upon the Great Unconformity because of the highly resistant cliffs of the base layer, vertical Tapeats Sandstone cliffs. The Bright Angel Shale is easily identified for two reasons. Its soft-greenish color stands out against the browns, reds, and whites of neighboring rock units. And secondly for its slope-forming character against mostly cliff-forming resistant rocks. The Bright Angel Shale is about thick at its maximum. It is a nonresistant slope-forming unit. __NOTOC__ In geomorphology, a butte () is an isolated hill with steep, often vertical sides and a small, relatively flat top; buttes are smaller landforms than mesas, plateaus, and tablelands. The word ''butte'' comes from a French word meaning knoll (but of any size); its use is prevalent in the Western United States, including the southwest where ''mesa'' (Spanish for "table") is used for the larger landform. Due to their distinctive shapes, buttes are frequently landmarks in plains and mountainous areas. Tanner Trail
The Tanner Trail is a hiking trail located on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park, located in the U.S. state of Arizona. The trailhead is located at Lipan Point, a prominent lookout located to the east of the Grand Canyon Village, and the trail ends at the Colorado River at Tanner Rapids. History The Tanner Trail started out as an ancient Anasazi and Hopi route to the Colorado River. Most believe today that Tanner Canyon is where García López de Cárdenas became the first European to encounter the Grand Canyon. The trail is named after Seth Tanner, a 19th-century prospector who improved the trail so he would have better access to his copper mine. It is also believed that Tanner Canyon was once used as an old horse thief trail where buried gold known as Long Tom's treasure is located. Escalante Route
The Escalante Route is a hiking trail on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park, located in the U.S. state of Arizona. It starts near the Tanner Rapids ( Tanner Graben) on the Colorado River and follows the river. It also passes by Escalante Creek and ends near the Hance Rapids. It falls into the lowest maintenance category ("route") of the Grand Canyon trails which means it is essentially unmaintained. There is a 30-feet cliff located near the Hance Rapids, popularly known as the Papago Wall, which needs to be climbed. The National Park Service advises to bring a rope for backpacks. There are several other easy, yet avoidable climbing opportunities in 75 Mile Canyon, some of which have been marked by cairns. The geology of the Grand Canyon area includes one of the most complete and studied sequences of rock on Earth. The nearly 40 major sedimentary rock layers exposed in the Grand Canyon and in the Grand Canyon National Park area range in age from about 200 million to nearly 2 billion years old.
