Enzo Ghigo
Enzo Ghigo (born 24 February 1953) is an Italian politician, former President of Piedmont from 1995 to 2005. Biography A manager of the Publitalia-Fininvest group, whose owner was Silvio Berlusconi, Ghigo entered politics in December 1993, becoming the promoter of Forza Italia in Piedmont. Elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1994, Ghigo was elected President of Piedmont in 1995, leading a center-right coalition. In 2000, Ghigo was re-elected Governor, defeating The Olive Tree candidate Livia Turco, and remained at the head of his region until 2005, when, seeking a third term, he was defeated by The Union candidate Mercedes Bresso. The Order of Merit of the Italian Republic ( it, Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana) is the senior Italian order of merit. It was established in 1951 by the second President of the Italian Republic, Luigi Einaudi. The highest-ranking honour of the Republic, it is awarded for "merit acquired by the nation" in the fields of literature, the arts, economy, public service, and social, philanthropic and humanitarian activities and for long and conspicuous service in civilian and military careers. The post-nominal letters for the order are OMRI. The Union (Italy)
The Union ( it, L'Unione) was a heterogenous centre-left political and electoral alliance of political parties in Italy. The Union was the direct heir of The Olive Tree coalition which represented the centre-left in the 1996 and 2001 general elections. However, The Union also included parties of the radical left, which were not affiliated with The Olive Tree. The Union was led by Romano Prodi, Prime Minister of Italy from May 2006 to May 2008, and former President of the European Commission.
