Ekkerøy
Ekkerøy (also: ''Store Ekkerøy'' or sme, Ihkkot) is one of the oldest fishing villages on the Varangerfjorden in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. It is located in Vadsø Municipality about east of the town of Vadsø which is the administrative centre of the municipality and the county. The village of Valen lies just north of Ekkerøy. Historically, the population was Norwegian or Kven, rather than Sami, and the economy was based on fishing and farming. There are about forty people living in the village today and tourism forms part of the economy. Geography As the ending "øy" in the name indicates, the place was originally an island; however, it is now joined to the Varanger peninsula by a narrow isthmus of land. Valen is a tiny hamlet in Vadsø Municipality in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. It is located at the mainland end of the narrow isthmus of land which joins the small Ekkerøy peninsula to the mainland Varanger Peninsula. Finnmark
Finnmark (; se, Finnmárku ; fkv, Finmarku; fi, Ruija ; russian: Финнмарк) was a county in the northern part of Norway, and it is scheduled to become a county again in 2024. On 1 January 2020, Finnmark was merged with the neighbouring county of Troms to form the new Troms og Finnmark county. Kven People
Kvens (; fi, kveeni; no, kvenar, kvener; sv, kväner; se, kveanat) are a Balto-Finnic ethnic minority in Norway. They are descended from Finnish peasants and fishermen who emigrated from the northern parts of Finland and Sweden to Northern Norway in the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1996, Kvens were granted minority status in Norway, and in 2005 the Kven language was recognized as a minority language in Norway. Name The origin of the term Kven is disputed. There is no evidence that modern Kvens are descendants of the Kvens mentioned in a few ancient Norwegian and Icelandic sources. Fishing
Fishing is the activity of trying to catch fish. Fish are often caught as wildlife from the natural environment, but may also be caught from stocked bodies of water such as ponds, canals, park wetlands and reservoirs. Varanger Peninsula
The Varanger Peninsula ( no, Varangerhalvøya; sme, Várnjárga; fkv, Varenkinniemi) is a peninsula in Finnmark county, Norway. It is located in the northeasternmost part of Norway, along the Barents Sea. The peninsula has the Tanafjorden to the west, the Varangerfjorden to the south, and the Barents Sea to the north and east. The municipalities of Vadsø, Båtsfjord, Berlevåg, Vardø, Tana, and Nesseby share the peninsula. Nesseby and Tana are only partially on the peninsula, with the rest being entirely on the peninsula.
