ECI Prize
The ECI Prize is a prize awarded annually from 1986 onwards to an ecologist distinguished by outstanding and sustained scientific achievements. It is awarded jointly by the International Ecology Institute, a non-profit organization of research ecologists based in Germany dedicated to fostering ecological knowledge and awareness, and the Otto Kinne Foundation. The prize both honors the recipient and requires him or her to serve science and society by authoring a book to be published in the series 'Excellence in Ecology', published by Inter-Research and available at cost price. The ECI Prize carries an endowment of Euro, € 6,000 and is awarded alternatively for terrestrial ecology, marine ecology and Freshwater biology, limnetic ecology. Ecologist
Ecology () is the study of the relationships between living organisms, including humans, and their physical environment. Ecology considers organisms at the individual, population, community, ecosystem, and biosphere level. Ecology overlaps with the closely related sciences of biogeography, evolutionary biology, genetics, ethology, and natural history. Ecology is a branch of biology, and it is not synonymous with environmentalism. Ramon Margalef
Ramon Margalef i López (Barcelona 16 May 1919 - 23 May 2004) was a Spanish biologist and ecologist. He was Emeritus Professor of Ecology at the Faculty of Biology of the University of Barcelona. Margalef, one of the most prominent scientists that Spain has produced, worked at the Institute of Applied Biology (1946–1951), and at the Fisheries Research Institute, which he directed during 1966-1967. He created the Department of Ecology of the University of Barcelona, from where he trained a huge number of ecologists, limnologists and oceanographers. In 1967 he became Spain's first professor of ecology. Monica Turner
Monica G. Turner is an American ecologist known for her work at Yellowstone National Park since the large fires of 1988. She is currently the Eugene P. Odum Professor of Ecology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Life and career Turner was raised in the suburbs of Long Island just outside New York city. Her father was a self-employed lawyer and her mother was a Girl Scouts executive. Turner obtained her B.S in Biology summa cum laude from Fordham University in 1980. Turner went on to receive her Ph.D. in Ecology from the University of Georgia. After finishing her Ph.D., she stayed at the University of Georgia as a postdoctoral researcher. Daniel Pauly
Daniel Pauly is a French-born marine biologist, well known for his work in studying human impacts on global fisheries and in 2020 was the most cited fisheries scientist in the world. He is a professor and the project leader of the Sea Around Us Project at the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries at the University of British Columbia. He also served as Director of the UBC Fisheries Centre from November 2003 to October 2008. Biography Pauly was born in Paris, France. He grew up, however, in La Chaux de Fonds, Switzerland in what was called a strange "Dickensian" childhood where he was forced to stay as a live-in servant to a new family. Louis Legendre (oceanographer)
Louis Legendre (; born 16 February 1945) is a Canadian-trained oceanographer whose later career took him to France. Education Legendre degreed in liberal arts (B.A.) and sciences (B.Sc., Zoology) at the University of Montreal in 1964 and 1967, respectively. He degreed in oceanography (Ph.D.) at Dalhousie University (Halifax, Canada) in 1971. Academic career Legendre joined the faculty at Laval University in 1973, rising to full professor in 1981. In 2000, he joined the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), and was director of the Villefranche Oceanography Laboratory. In 2009, he took a position at the Pierre and Marie Curie University (as of 2018, Sorbonne University). He is a professor emeritus at Laval University and at Sorbonne University. Ilkka Hanski
Ilkka Aulis Hanski (14 February 1953 – 10 May 2016) was a Finnish ecologist at the University of Helsinki, Finland. The Metapopulation Research Center led by Hanski, until his death, has been nominated as a Center of Excellence by the Academy of Finland. The group studies species living in fragmented landscapes and attempts to advance metapopulation ecology research. Metapopulation ecology itself studies populations of plants and animals which are separated in space by occupying patches.
