European Ombudsman
The European Ombudsman is an inter-institutional body of the European Union that holds the institutions, bodies and agencies of the EU to account, and promotes good administration. The Ombudsman helps people, businesses and organisations facing problems with the EU administration by investigating complaints, as well as by proactively looking into broader systemic issues. The current Ombudsman is Teresa Anjinho. The European Ombudsman has offices in Strasbourg and Brussels. History The European Ombudsman was established by the Maastricht Treaty and the first, Jacob Söderman of Finland, was elected by the European Parliament in 1995. The current Ombudsman, Teresa Anjinho of Portugal, took office on 27 February 2025. Appointment The European Ombudsman is elected by the European Parliament. Teresa Anjinho
Teresa Maria de Moura Anjinho (born 3 October 1974) is a Portuguese legal expert, academic researcher, and public servant known for her extensive contributions to human rights, international law, and public policy. She served as a member of the Supervisory Committee of the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) and is the Ambassador of the Alliance SDG Portugal, where she promotes Sustainable Development Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions. Anjinho was elected to serve as European Ombudsman, EU Ombudsman for the period between 2025 and 2029. The European Code of Good Administrative Behaviour is a resolution of the European Parliament whose literature is related legislation to the Staff Regulations of the European Communities. European Citizens' Initiative
The European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) is a European Union (EU) mechanism aimed at increasing direct democracy by enabling "EU citizens to participate directly in the development of EU policies", introduced with the Treaty of Lisbon in 2007. This popular initiative enables one million citizens of the European Union, with a minimum number of nationals from at least seven member states, to call directly on the European Commission to propose a legal act (notably a Directive or Regulation) in an area where the member states have conferred powers onto the EU level. Emily O'Reilly is an author and former journalist and broadcaster who became Ireland's first female Ombudsman in 2003, succeeding Kevin Murphy. On 3 July 2013, she was voted European Ombudsman by the European Parliament. She was re-elected in 2014 and in 2019, in each case for a mandate of five more years. She was educated at University College Dublin, Trinity College Dublin, and Harvard University, where she was awarded a Nieman Fellowship in journalism. Paraskevas Nikiforos Diamandouros (, ) (born June 25, 1942) is a Greek academic who was the first National Ombudsman of Greece from 1998 to 2003 and has been Ombudsman for the European Union from April 2003 to October 2013. He was re-elected as European Ombudsman in 2005 and again in 2010. Personal life Diamandouros was born in Athens, Greece, on June 25, 1942. Nikiforos (, ) is a village and a former municipality in the Drama regional unit, of East Macedonia and Thrace, Greece.
