Elizabeth J. Feinler
Elizabeth Jocelyn "Jake" Feinler (born March 2, 1931) is an American information scientist. From 1972 until 1989 she was director of the Network Information Systems Center at the Stanford Research Institute (SRI International). Her group operated the Network Information Center (NIC) for the ARPANET as it evolved into the Defense Data Network (DDN) and the Internet. Early life and education Feinler was born on March 2, 1931, in Wheeling, West Virginia, where she also grew up. In 1954, she received an undergraduate degree from West Liberty State College, the first from her family to attend college. Career Early career Feinler was working toward a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Purdue University when she decided to earn some money by working for a year or two before starting on her thesis. Janet Abbate
Janet Abbate (born June 69, 1962) is an associate professor of science, technology, and society at Virginia Tech. Her research focuses on the history of computer science and the Internet, particularly on the participation of women in the field. Janet Abbate is also the author of Inventing the Internet (MIT Press, 1999), Standards Policy for Information Infrastructure (MIT Press, 1995), and Recoding Gender Women’s Changing Participation in Computing (MIT Press, 2012). Janet Abbate also attended The University of Pennsylvania for her Ph.D. Academic career Abbate received her bachelor's degree from Radcliffe College and her master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania. ''History of Technology'' is a book series publishing annual volumes since 1976, covering the history of technology in different countries and time periods. The first seven volumes of the series were edited by A. Rupert Hall and Norman Smith. Volumes 8 through 11 were edited by Norman Smith. Volumes 12 through 18 were edited by Graham Hollister-Short and Frank James. Volumes 19 through 22 were edited by Graham Hollister-Short. Volume 30 was edited by Ian Inkster and Angel Calvo. Volumes 23 through 29, and 31 through 34 were edited by Ian Inkster. The entire book series is available for purchase on Bloomsbury’s website. The books were originally published by Bloomsbury Publishing, then for some time they were published by Continuum International Publishing Group. NLS (computer System)
NLS (oN-Line System) was a revolutionary computer collaboration system developed in the 1960s. It was designed by Douglas Engelbart and implemented by researchers at the Augmentation Research Center (ARC) at the SRI International, Stanford Research Institute (SRI). It was the first computer system to employ the practical use of hypertext links, a computer mouse, raster scan, raster-scan computer monitor, video monitors, information organized by relevance, GUI, screen windowing, presentation programs, and other modern computing concepts. It was funded by ARPA (the predecessor to DARPA, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), NASA, and the United States Air Force, US Air Force. Jon Postel
Jonathan Bruce Postel (; August 6, 1943 – October 16, 1998) was an American computer scientist who made many significant contributions to the development of the Internet, particularly with respect to Internet Standard, standards. He is known principally for being the Editor of the Request for Comments, Request for Comment (RFC) document series, for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), and for administering the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) until his death. During his lifetime he was referred to as the "god of the Internet" for his comprehensive influence; Postel himself noted that this "compliment" came with a barb, the suggestion that he should be replaced by a "professional," and responded with typical self-effacing matter-of-factness: "Of course, there isn’t any 'God of the Internet.' Steve Crocker
Stephen D. Crocker (born October 15, 1944) is an American Internet pioneer. In 1969, he created the ARPA "Network Working Group" and the Request for Comments series. He served as chair of the board of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) from 2011 through 2017. Education Steve Crocker attended Van Nuys High School, as did Vint Cerf and Jon Postel. Crocker received his bachelor's degree (1968) and PhD (1977) from the University of California, Los Angeles. Internet Engineering Task Force
The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) is a standards organization for the Internet standard, Internet and is responsible for the technical standards that make up the Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP). It has no formal membership roster or requirements and all its participants are volunteers. Their work is usually funded by employers or other sponsors.
