Douglas Roberts
Philip Douglas Roberts (1919–1976) was a South Australian painter and art critic. History Roberts was born in Kadina, South Australia, the youngest son of Albert John Roberts (ca.1874 – 3 September 1944) and Sarah Roberts, née Behrmann. Educated at Kadina, he was a keen cricketer, and at one time held the batting record for the Yorke Peninsula league. He trained as a teacher and was first appointed to the Thebarton Junior Technical School in 1938. He was a regular art critic for both South Australia daily newspapers and the ''Sunday Mail''. He was a foundation member of the South Australian branch of the Contemporary Art Society He was a senior lecturer at the South Australian School of Arts, then acting principal 1957–1958 and principal 1964– . Kadina, South Australia
Kadina ( ) is a town on the Yorke Peninsula of the Australian state of South Australia, approximately 144 kilometres north-northwest of the state capital of Adelaide. The largest town of the Peninsula, Kadina is one of the three Copper Triangle towns famous for their shared copper mining history. The three towns are known as "Little Cornwall" for the significant number of immigrants from Cornwall who worked at the mines in the late 19th century. Kadina's surrounds form an important agricultural base for the region, and are used for growing cereal crops. Kadina used to be a mining town but now the majority of Kadina's land is used for farming. Description Kadina is about north-east of Moonta and east of the port town of Wallaroo. The Kadina And Wallaroo Times
The ''Kadina and Wallaroo Times'' was a newspaper published in Kadina, and also serving the nearby Wallaroo, South Australia from August 1888 to August 1966. In 1968 the paper merged to form the ''Yorke Peninsula Country Times''. History With the 1861 discovery of copper at a property in the northern Yorke Peninsula, the town of Kadina quickly grew to 8,000. Brothers David and Andrew Fyfe Taylor, and George Thompson Clarkson founded the newspaper in the nearby port of Wallaroo in 1865. The newspapers mainly focused on reporting the happenings in these two towns and nearby Moonta. Editorial opinion was generally politically conservative and supportive of free trade. It opposed miners' strikes and in particular opposed to Premier Charles Kingston. Some early editions of the paper contained articles written in Welsh. Contemporary Art Society (Australia)
The Contemporary Art Society is an Australian organisation formed in Victoria 1938 to promote non-representative forms of art. Separate, autonomous branches were formed in each state of the Commonwealth by 1966, although not all of them still exist today. Victoria The Contemporary Art Society (now Contemporary Art Society of Victoria (Inc.) was established on 13 July 1938, by George Bell. It held its first exhibition in June 1939 at the National Gallery of Victoria, displaying works of artists from all over Australia. Members were not only committed to contemporary stylistic experimentation, but also to engagement with contemporary social realities, and in December 1942 sponsored an "Antifascist Exhibition" at Melbourne's Athenaeum Gallery. Adelaide High School
Adelaide High School is a coeducational state high school situated on the corner of West Terrace and Glover Avenue in the Adelaide Parklands. Following the Advanced School for Girls, it was the second government high school in South Australia and the first coeducational public high school in that state. It currently has an enrolment of approximately 1,500 students. History In 1879, John Anderson Hartley, Director of Education, established the Advanced School for Girls in Grote Street, Adelaide. It was the first public high school in Australia, those in New South Wales following in the 1880s.
