Dirk (), formerly Dirk van den Broek , is a supermarket chain that operates 121 stores in the Netherlands. History The original business was established in 1942 by Dirk van den Broek (1924-2020) as a milk store in Amsterdam. In 1948 it was converted into a self-service market. The first supermarket was opened in 1953, also in Amsterdam. In 1972 Dirk started the Digros formule located in Katwijk, in 1973 he bought the supermarkets from Bas van der Heijden which were located around Rotterdam Rotterdam ( , , , lit. A supermarket is a self-service shop offering a wide variety of food, beverages and household products, organized into sections. Dirk Van Den Broek
Dirk van den Broek (; 27 March 1924 – 8 April 2020) was a Dutch businessman, founder of Cooperating Dirk van den Broek Companies. Around 2014, all of his stores were renamed just into Dirk. He was born in Amsterdam in 1924. At the age of 15, he started his own business by selling milk by a cart throughout the city. During 1942, he began a small dairy store. In 1953, he started the first supermarket in Amsterdam. Throughout the years his company took over some other grocery stores and he started D-reizen, as travel agent. At the moment the company is one of the oldest family-owned businesses in the Netherlands. He ran more than 120 stores, most concentrated at the western part of the country. Van den Broek was knighted as Officer in the Order of Orange Nassau in 1990 by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. Katwijk (), also spelled Katwyk, is a coastal municipality and town in the province of South Holland, which is situated in the mid-western part of the Netherlands. DekaMarkt is a Dutch retail company which operates a chain of supermarkets in the country. DekaMarkt is a member of Superunie, a Dutch purchasing organization for supermarkets. DekaMarkt has stores in North Holland, South Holland, Gelderland, Overijssel and Flevoland.
