Clanwilliam, Manitoba
Clanwilliam, Manitoba is a community in the Rural Municipality of Minto-Odanah in Manitoba, Canada. The Municipality of Clanwilliam – Erickson immediately north takes its name from the community. Clanwilliam is in a mainly agricultural area located north of Minnedosa along PR 262. A post office was opened there in 1882 and was originally identified as ''Clan William'' (30-16-17W). In 1902 the post office was moved to coordinate with the Canadian National railway on 13-16-18W. The original name requested for the community by the residents was Lamontagne but Ottawa assigned the present name to honour Richard Meade, 4th Earl of Clanwilliam Admiral of the Fleet Richard James Meade, 4th Earl of Clanwilliam (3 October 1832 – 4 August 1907), styled Lord Gillford until 1879, was a Royal Navy officer. Rural Municipality Of Minto-Odanah
The Rural Municipality of Minto-Odanah is a rural municipality (RM) in the Canadian province of Manitoba that incorporated on January 1, 2015 via the amalgamation of the RMs of Minto and Odanah. It was formed as a requirement of ''The Municipal Amalgamations Act'', which required that municipalities with a population less than 1,000 amalgamate with one or more neighbouring municipalities by 2015. The Government of Manitoba initiated these amalgamations in order for municipalities to meet the 1997 minimum population requirement of 1,000 to incorporate a municipality. Minnedosa, Manitoba
Minnedosa is a town in the southwestern part of the Canadian province of Manitoba situated 50 kilometres (32 mi) north of Brandon, Manitoba on the Little Saskatchewan River. The town's name means "flowing water" in the Dakota language. The population of Minnedosa reported in the 2021 Canadian Census was 2,741. The town is surrounded by the Rural Municipality of Minto – Odanah. History Prior to the arrival of Europeans in the area of Minnedosa, the land was primarily travelled and used by the nomadic Ojibway, Cree, Assiniboine, and Sioux peoples. John Tanner was the grandson of John Tanner who had been raised by a Odawa. He was an American settler who arrived in the area in 1869. The younger Tanner was the first Métis settler in the area and ran a ferry service across the Little Saskatchewan River. Manitoba Provincial Road 262 is a provincial road in the western region of the Canadian province of Manitoba. Route description PR 262 begins at PTH 10/ PR 354 at Onanole, and terminates at PTH 10/ PTH 24 at Tremaine. From Onanole, it travels southeast before turning south and passing through the community of Scandinavia. The road then continues south for before reaching the village of Clanwilliam, intersecting PR 357 near Hilltop and eastbound PR 265 just north of Clanwilliam. After leaving Clanwilliam, PR 262 continues for to meet PTH 16A (Main Street) in Minnedosa, passing Minnedosa Lake which is located northeast of the town centre. Richard Meade, 4th Earl Of Clanwilliam
Admiral of the Fleet Richard James Meade, 4th Earl of Clanwilliam (3 October 1832 – 4 August 1907), styled Lord Gillford until 1879, was a Royal Navy officer. As a junior officer, he served at the Battle of Escape Creek and at the Battle of Fatshan Creek during the campaign against Chinese pirates. He also took part in the Battle of Canton, where he was severely wounded, during the Second Opium War. As a senior officer Meade went on to be commander of the Steamship reserve at Portsmouth, commander of the Flying Squadron and Commander-in-Chief, North America and West Indies Station. His last appointment was as Commander-in-Chief, Portsmouth.
