Chris Bond (wheelchair Rugby)
Christopher Adam Bond, (born 28 May 1986) is an Australian wheelchair rugby player. He has won gold medals at the 2012 London and 2016 Rio Paralympics and competed at the 2020 Summer Paralympics. Personal Bond and his identical twin brother were born on 28 May 1986, and grew up in the Australian Capital Territory. He is missing both legs below his knees, his left wrist and his right four fingers as a result of a severe infection from a flesh eating bacterium he got while also being diagnosed with leukemia when he was nineteen years old. During his rehab, he was often one of the youngest people in gym. While he adjusted to life without his limbs, he started swimming at the pool at the Australian Institute of Sport. Wheelchair Rugby Classification
Wheelchair rugby classification is the seven class system that assigns players a point value based on functional mobility to insure parity in athletic ability on the court at any given time. Classification is handled by the International Wheelchair Rugby Federation. Definition In wheelchair rugby, players are assessed into seven classes: 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, and 3.5 points. The lower level points indicate less functional ability and the higher points indicate greater functional ability. Men and women both play the sport, and they play on the same team. There are no separate events for men and women. Only four players are on the court at any given time. The total points on the floor for a team cannot exceed 8, but this maximum is increased by 0.5 points for every female on the court. Australia National Wheelchair Rugby Team
Wheelchair rugby is a sport with national representation at the Paralympic games. The Australian Team is known as the 'Steelers'. Australia has competed at every Paralympics Games since the sport gained full Paralympic Medal status at the 2000 Summer Paralympics. The Steelers also competed in the 1996 Summer Paralympics where wheelchair rugby was a demonstration sport. The 'Steelers' defeated Canada at the 2012 Summer Paralympics, 2012 London Games to win its first gold medal. In 2014, it won its first World Wheelchair Rugby Championships, World Championship by defeating Canada. In winning the world championship, the Steelers became the second nation in history to hold both the Paralympic and world championship titles concurrently. 2022 IWRF World Championship
The 2022 Wheelchair Rugby World Championship was the 8th international championship for wheelchair rugby. It was held at the DGI-Huset recreational centre in Vejle, Denmark from 10–16 October 2022 and contested by the world's top twelve national teams. The tournament was won by Australia, defeating United States in the final by 58–55 to claim their second title. Tournament Twelve teams contested the 2022 Wheelchair Rugby World Championship. The preliminary rounds consisted of a group stage where the teams were split into two leagues which were contested as a round-robin. Wheelchair Rugby At The 2020 Summer Paralympics
The Wheelchair rugby tournament at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan was the seventh edition of Wheelchair rugby as a Paralympic sport since its debut as a demonstration sport at the 1996 Summer Paralympics in Atlanta. The competition was hosted at the Yoyogi National Stadium and was held from 25 to 29 August 2021. Eight teams competed in the competition which included the debutant of Denmark at the Paralympics. The eight teams were separated into two groups of four with the top two teams from each group qualifying through to the semi-finals while the bottom two played off in the fifth and seventh place match respectively. The remaining four teams then played-off in two semi-finals with the winners going through to the gold medal play-off while the losers met in the bronze-medal match. The 2018 IWRF World Championship was the 7th international championship for wheelchair rugby. It was held in Sydney, Australia at the Quaycentre and Genea Netball Centre in Sydney Olympic Park from August 5 to August 10. The tournament was won by Japan, their first title. The naming rights sponsor of the event was GIO. It was organised by Disability Sports Australia and the International Wheelchair Rugby Federation and was the biggest disability sporting event to be held in Sydney since the 2000 Paralympic Games. The Great Britain national wheelchair rugby team represents Great Britain in international wheelchair rugby.
