Cycling Central
''Cycling Central'' is an Australian sports program, that talks about the various cycling competitions in Australia and around the world. It is the only free-to-air program in Australia that is dedicated to the sport. Broadcast history The first series began in 2003 over 13 weeks, as a magazine-style program, continuing until 2007 when it was axed. The show returned to a one-hour format on 1 August 2010 and has screened every week for 52 weeks of the year ever since. Taking the show on the road is not uncommon. Cycling Central has been screened live on location at the Tour Down Under, the Jayco Herald-Sun Tour, the Cycling Australia Road National Championships from Ballarat and the UCI Track Cycling World Championships held in Melbourne in April 2012. It currently airs on SBS One on Sunday afternoons at 5pm, and runs for an hour. SBS is a national public television network in Australia. Launched on 24 October 1980, it is the responsibility of SBS's television division, and is available nationally. In 2018, SBS had a 7.7% audience share. As of 2022, SBS is the lowest-rated television network in Australia, behind the Seven Network, the Nine Network, ABC TV and Network 10. History Origins SBS began test transmissions in April 1979 as ''SBS Ethnic Television'' when it showed various foreign language programs on ABV-2 Melbourne and ABN-2 Sydney on Sunday mornings. Mike Tomalaris
Michael Tomalaris is an Australian television reporter and presenter. He was previously host of SBS Television sports programs including its Tour de France coverage. He was also formerly a presenter for SBS World News. Career A print journalist by training, Tomalaris got his break in television in 1987 when Les Murray asked him to provide commentary for a National Soccer League match. Tomalaris joined SBS full-time in 1992 and became a recognised commentator of matches involving the NSL, Socceroos and Olyroos. He went on to work as a reporter/commentator for SBS at the 1992 and 1996 UEFA European Football Championship and the 1994, 1998, 2002, 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cup, and was known for developing the network's Tour de France coverage. He was recognised by the Australian Sports Commission for "Most Outstanding Contribution to a Sport by an Individual" at its 2011 awards. 2012 UCI Track Cycling World Championships
The 2012 UCI Track Cycling World Championships was the World Championships for track cycling in 2012. They took place in Melbourne, Australia from 4 to 8 April 2012. The championships took place in the Hisense Arena which previously hosted the world championships in 2004 and from 2008 to 2010 a round of the World Cup as well as the track cycling at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. The championships were also the final ranking event for the purposes of Olympic qualification. Ten of the nineteen World Championship disciplines are replicated at the 2012 Summer Olympics. The championships were dominated by the rivalry between Australia and Great Britain, who shared 12 of the 19 gold medals available between them, including in eight of the ten Olympic events.
