Coen Hemker
Hendrik Coenraad "Coen" Hemker (born 21 July 1934) is a Dutch biochemist and academic administrator. He was one of the founders of Maastricht University and was its its ''rector magnificus'' from 1982 to 1984. He was a professor of biochemistry from 1975 until 1999. In his research he has mainly studied thrombosis and hemostasis. Early life and career Hemker was born on 21 July 1934 in Amsterdam. With his mother being a heart patient and his father spending a lot of time on his hobbies, Hemker frequently looked after his four younger brothers. He subsequently wanted to study pediatrics but was advised by Dutch pediatrician to study biochemistry for a year. Hemker obtained his medical degree from the University of Amsterdam in 1959. Vitamin K Antagonist
Vitamin K antagonists (VKA) are a group of substances that reduce blood clotting by reducing the action of vitamin K. The term "vitamin K antagonist" is technically a misnomer, as the drugs do not directly antagonise the action of vitamin K in the pharmacological sense, but rather the recycling of vitamin K. They are used as anticoagulant medications in the prevention of thrombosis, and in pest control, as rodenticides. Mechanism of action These drugs deplete the active form of the vitamin by inhibiting the enzyme vitamin K epoxide reductase and thus the recycling of the inactive vitamin K epoxide back to the active reduced form of vitamin K. The drugs are structurally similar to vitamin K and act as competitive inhibitors of the enzyme. The Academia Europaea is a pan-European Academy of Humanities, Letters, Law, and Sciences. Willem Joost "Wim" Deetman (born 3 April 1945) is a retired Dutch politician and teacher who served as Minister of Education and Sciences from 1982 to 1989, Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1989 to 1996 and Mayor of The Hague from 1996 until 2008. Problem-based learning (PBL) is a student-centered pedagogy in which students learn about a subject through the experience of solving an open-ended problem found in trigger material. The PBL process does not focus on problem solving with a defined solution, but it allows for the development of other desirable skills and attributes.
