Closed-end Fund
A closed-end fund (CEF), also known as a closed-end mutual fund, is an investment vehicle fund that raises capital by issuing a fixed number of shares at its inception, and then invests that capital in financial assets such as stocks and bonds. After inception it is closed to new capital, although fund managers sometimes employ leverage. Investors can buy and sell the existing shares in secondary markets. CEFs are the oldest form of pooled investment still used in the United States, dating to the 1800s. In the United States, closed-end funds sold publicly must be registered under both the Securities Act of 1933 and the Investment Company Act of 1940. U.S.-based closed-end funds are referred to under the law as ''closed-end companies'' and form one of three SEC-recognized types of investment companies along with mutual funds and unit investment trusts. Leverage (finance)
In finance, leverage, also known as gearing, is any technique involving borrowing funds to buy an investment. Financial leverage is named after a lever in physics, which amplifies a small input force into a greater output force. Financial leverage uses borrowed money to augment the available capital, thus increasing the funds available for (perhaps risky) investment. If successful this may generate large amounts of profit. However, if unsuccessful, there is a risk of not being able to pay back the borrowed money. Normally, a lender will set a limit on how much risk it is prepared to take, and will set a limit on how much leverage it will permit. It would often require the acquired asset to be provided as collateral security for the loan. Leverage can arise in a number of situations. Jonathan Berk (finance)
Jonathan B. Berk is the A.P. Giannini Professor of Finance at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He has held this position since 2008. Prior to his arrival at Stanford University, he was the Sylvan Coleman Professor of Finance at the University of California, Berkeley. He worked as an analyst for Goldman Sachs before beginning his academic career. Berk was born on April 22, 1962, in Johannesburg, South Africa. He earned his BA in physics at Rice University in 1984. A listed investment company (LIC) is an Australian '' closed-end'' collective investment scheme similar to investment trusts in the UK and closed-end funds in the United States. Instead of regularly issuing new shares or canceling shares as investors join and leave the fund, investors buy and sell to each other on the ASX. Investment Trust
An investment trust is a form of investment fund found mostly in the United Kingdom and Japan. Investment trusts are constituted as Public limited company, public limited companies and are therefore closed ended since the fund managers cannot redeem or create shares. The first investment trust was the Foreign & Colonial Investment Trust, started in 1868 "to give the investor of moderate means the same advantages as the large capitalists in diminishing the risk by spreading the investment over a number of stocks". In many respects, the investment trust was the progenitor of the investment company in the U.S. The name is somewhat misleading, given that (according to law) an investment "trust" is not in fact a "English trust law, trust" in the legal sense at all, but a separate legal person or a UK company law, company.
