Clare H. Timberlake
Clare Hayes Timberlake (October 29, 1907 – February 22, 1982) was an American diplomat and career Foreign Service Officer who served as the first United States Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and later as special assistant to the Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs and as a member of the Board of Examiners of the Foreign Service. He served in the Department of State for forty years and held diplomatic posts in Canada, Latin America, Europe, and Asia throughout his career. Early life and education Clare Timberlake was born in Jackson, Michigan on October 29, 1907, the son of Wilbur and Dorothy. He studied at the University of Michigan, before studying law at Harvard. United States Ambassador To The Democratic Republic Of The Congo
This is a list of ambassadors of the United States to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. From 1877 until 1960, the republic had been a colony of Belgium, first under the name Congo Free State and then Belgian Congo. The Congo was granted its independence on June 30, 1960, adopting the name “Republic of the Congo” ''(République du Congo)''. As the French colony of Middle Congo ''(Moyen-Congo)'' also chose the name Republic of Congo upon receiving its independence, the two countries were more commonly known as Congo-Léopoldville and Congo-Brazzaville, after their capital cities. The United States immediately recognized the new Republic of the Congo and moved to establish diplomatic relations.
