Chief Big Road
Big Road (c. 1834 – 1897) was a Oglala warrior and artist of the Oyuhpe Band. Also called Čanku Tanka or Wide Trail, Big Road fought in the Fetterman Fight of Red Cloud's War and the Battle of the Little Bighorn. His artwork is in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution. In May 1877, he surrendered with Crazy Horse. In October 1877, he was part of a delegation to Washington, D.C. Big Road fled to Canada after Crazy Horse was killed, returning to Pine Ridge Reservation around 1881. In 1891 he again traveled with several others to Washington. The Oglala (pronounced , meaning 'to scatter one's own' in Lakota language, Lakota) are one of the seven subtribes of the Lakota people who, along with the Dakota people, Dakota, make up the Sioux, Očhéthi Šakówiŋ (Seven Council Fires). In United States history, an Indian agent was an individual authorized to interact with American Indian tribes on behalf of the U.S. government. Agents established in Nonintercourse Act of 1793 The federal regulation of Indian affairs in the United States first included development of the position of Indian agent in the Nonintercourse Act of 1793, a revision of the original 1790 law. This required land sales by or from Indians to be federally licensed and permitted. The legislation also authorized the President to "appoint such persons, from time to time, as temporary agents to reside among the Indians," and guide them into acculturation of American society by changing their agricultural practices and domestic activities. The Bureau of American Ethnology (or BAE, originally, Bureau of Ethnology) was established in 1879 by an act of Congress for the purpose of transferring archives, records and materials relating to the Indians of North America from the Department of the Interior to the Smithsonian Institution.
