Cakaudrove Province
Cakaudrove () is one of fourteen provinces of Fiji, and one of three based principally on the northern island of Vanua Levu, occupying the south-eastern third of the island and including the nearby islands of Taveuni, Rabi, Kioa, and numerous other islands in the Vanua Levu Group. It has a total land area of 2,816 square kilometers, with a population of 50,469 at the most recent census in 2017, making it the seventh most populous province. The only major town is Savusavu, with a population of 3,372 in 2007. Politics Cakaudrove has proved to be one of Fiji's most influential provinces. Ratu Sir Penaia Ganilau, Fiji's last Governor-General and first President, held the chiefly title of '' Tui Cakau'', with Cakaudrove as his traditional fiefdom. Provinces Of Fiji
The Provinces of Fiji (''"veiyasana" ''(pl.) and ''"yasana"'' (s.) in the Fijian language), and ''"प्रदेश''" in the Fiji Hindi language are the 14 administrative units into which the country is divided, particularly in relation to the provision of resources and services to the indigenous Fijian population by the Fijian Affairs Board. They are more or less derived from the major clan affiliations for each provincial region. Structure The most basic administrative unit in modern Fijian communities is the ''koro'' (village). Each village is led by a village headman called the '' turaga-ni-koro'', who is elected by the other villagers. A subunit of the ''yasana'' is the '' tikina'', which is composed of several koros. Naiqama Lalabalavu
''Ratu'' Naiqama Tawakecolati Lalabalavu, MBE (; born 23 December 1953) is a Fijian Paramount Chief and the current President of Fiji. He has served as the leader of the opposition and as Speaker of the Parliament of Fiji. On 31 October 2024 he was elected President of Fiji; he took office on 12 November 2024. Tui Cakau In 1999, Lalabalavu succeeded his late father, Ratu Glanville Lalabalavu, as the Tui Cakau, or Paramount Chief of Cakaudrove and of the Tovata Confederacy, one of three confederacies to which all Fijian tribes belong. Ratu Inoke Kubuabola
''Ratu'' Inoke Kubuabola (born 1948) is a Fijian politician and Cabinet Minister. He is the former leader of the opposition and Minister for Foreign Affairs. Since 11 August 2022, he has been a High Commissioner to New Zealand. Kubuabola worked as an assistant manager for the New Zealand Insurance Company in Auckland and Suva. From 1975 to 1987 he was secretary of the South Pacific Bible Society. A Fijian nationalist, he was involved in the planning of the 1987 Fijian coups d'état. Following the coup he was appointed Minister for Information in the Military Government, and subsequently served as Minister for Information, Broadcasting, Television and Telecommunication. ''Ratu'' Jone Yavala Kubuabola (11 September 1946 – 16 September 2018) was a Fijian politician. He was the country's Minister for Finance from 2000 until the government was deposed in the military coup of 5 December 2006. He also represented the South West Urban Fijian Communal constituencies in the House of Representatives, to which he was elected as a candidate of the ''Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua'' (SDL) in 2001. He retained his seat in the general election of 2006. He later helped set up the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA). He died on 16 September 2018 at age 72. Prior to his career in politics he was the second Governor of the Reserve Bank of Fiji. The National Alliance Party of Fiji (NAPF) was a Fijian political party. It was formally registered on 18 January 2005 by Ratu Epeli Ganilau, as the claimed successor to the defunct Alliance Party, which ruled Fiji from 1967 to 1987 under the leadership of the late ''Ratu'' Sir Kamisese Mara, Ganilau's father-in-law. Others involved with the party included university lecturer Meli Waqa as party secretary, and Manu Korovulavula as treasurer. The Deputy Leader was Hirdesh Sharma. Brigadier-General ''Ratu'' Epeli Ganilau, MC, MSD, (10 October 1951 – 23 March 2023) was a Fijian military officer and politician. His career previously encompassed such roles as Commander of the Fiji Military Forces and Chairman of the ''Bose Levu Vakaturaga'' (Great Council of Chiefs). On 15 January 2007 he was sworn in as Minister for Fijian Affairs in the interim Cabinet formed in the wake of the 2006 Fijian coup d'état which deposed the Qarase government on 5 December 2006. Manasa Tugia
Manasa Tugia is a former Fijian politician, who served as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives from 2005 to 2006, and as Chairman of Parliament's Justice, Law, and Order Committee. In the latter role, he coordinated hearings into the government's controversial Reconciliation, Tolerance, and Unity (RTU) Bill). Tugia won the Cakaudrove West Open Constituency for the Conservative Alliance (CAMV) at the parliamentary election of 2001, defeating the incumbent Laitia Toroki of the Soqosoqo ni Vakavulewa ni Taukei (SVT). ''Ratu'' Rakuita Saurara Vakalalabure (born 1962) is a Fijian lawyer and former politician who served as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives of Fiji from 2001 to 2004. In August 2004 he was convicted of participation in the 2000 Fijian coup d'état and sentenced to six years' imprisonment. List Of Political Parties In Fiji
Prior to the 2006 coup d'état, Fiji had a multi-party system, with numerous parties in which no one party had a chance of gaining power alone, forcing parties to work with each other to form coalition governments. In January 2013 the military regime promulgated new regulations governing the registration of political parties. Parties are required to have 5,000 financial members, obey a code of conduct, and be named in the English language. The existing 16 registered parties were required to re-register under the new rules, but only two – the Fiji Labour Party and the National Federation Party – did so. The rest were dissolved on 15 February 2013 and their assets forfeited to the government.
