The 1987 Davis Cup (also known as the 1987 Davis Cup by NEC for sponsorship purposes) was the 76th edition of the Davis Cup, the most important tournament between national teams in men's tennis. 72 teams would enter the competition, 16 in the World Group, 32 in the Europe Zone (including 11 in the Africa Zone), 13 in the Eastern Zone, and 11 in the Americas Zone. This year's tournament marked the introduction of the Africa Zone, which served as a qualifying sub-round for the Europe Zone. 71 teams would enter the competition, 16 in the World Group, 33 in the Europe Zone (including 9 in the Africa Zone), 13 in the Eastern Zone, and 9 in the Americas Zone. Bangladesh, Ivory Coast, Libya, Malta and Syria made their first appearances in the tournament. Ramesh Krishnan
Ramesh Krishnan (born 5 June 1961) is an Indian tennis coach and former professional tennis player. As a junior player in the late 1970s, he won the singles titles at both, Wimbledon and the French Open. He went on to reach three Grand Slam quarterfinals in the 1980s and was a part of the Indian team captained by Vijay Amritraj which reached the final of the Davis Cup in 1987 against Sweden. Krishnan also beat then-world No. 1, Mats Wilander, at the 1989 Australian Open. He became India's Davis Cup captain in 2007. Early life Ramesh was born in Madras, India, and is the son of Ramanathan Krishnan who reached the Wimbledon semifinal twice in the 1960s. Mats Arne Olof Wilander (; born 22 August 1964) is a Swedish former professional tennis player.
