Brookville Historic District is a national historic district located at Brookville, Franklin County, Indiana. The district encompasses 682 contributing buildings in the central business district and surrounding residential sections of Brookville. It developed between about 1811 and 1913, and includes notable examples of Federal and Greek Revival style architecture. Located in the district are the separately listed Franklin County Seminary and The Hermitage. Other notable contributing buildings include the James Brown Ray House (1811-1820), Old State Bank (c. 1817), James N. Brookville, Indiana
Brookville is a town in Brookville Township, Franklin County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,596 at the 2010 census. The town is the county seat of and the largest community entirely within Franklin County. History Brookville was platted in 1808 by Thomas Manwarring. The town derives its name from Brooks, the maiden name of a settler's mother. A post office has been in operation at Brookville since 1816. The Brookville Historic District, Franklin County Seminary, The Hermitage, and Whitewater Canal Historic District are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Geography Brookville is located at (39.422328, -85.009509). It contains the confluence of the East and West forks of the Whitewater River; the East Fork forms a portion of the eastern boundary of the town. Franklin County, Indiana
Franklin County is a county on the eastern border of the U.S. state of Indiana. In the 2020 United States Census, the county population was 22,785. The county seat is the town of Brookville. Franklin County is part of the Cincinnati, OH–KY–IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The only incorporated city in Franklin County is Batesville, which lies mostly in adjoining Ripley County. Geography Franklin County lies on the eastern edge of Indiana; its eastern border abuts the western border of Ohio. Federal Architecture
Federal-style architecture is the name for the classicizing architecture built in the newly founded United States between 1780 and 1830, and particularly from 1785 to 1815, which was heavily based on the works of Andrea Palladio with several innovations on Palladian architecture by Thomas Jefferson and his contemporaries first for Jefferson's Monticello estate and followed by many examples in government building throughout the United States. Greek Revival Architecture
The Greek Revival was an architectural style, architectural movement which began in the middle of the 18th century but which particularly flourished in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, predominantly in northern Europe and the United States and Canada, but also in Greece itself following independence in 1832. It revived many aspects of the forms and styles of ancient Greek architecture, in particular the Greek temple, with varying degrees of thoroughness and consistency. The Hermitage (Brookville, Indiana)
The Hermitage, also known as the John Ottis Adams and Winifred Brady Adams Home and Studio, is a historic home located at Brookville, Franklin County, Indiana. The original house was built about 1835 by well-to-do paper manufacturer James Henry Speer. It was reconfigured in 1898 by John Ottis Adams and his wife Winifred Brady Adams. It is a -story, Bungalow / American Craftsman inspired frame dwelling sheathed in clapboard. A full-width front porch supported by 17 tapered columns. At each end of the house are artist's studios, built for each of the Adamses. A rear section rises to stories. Also on the property are the levee built after a flood in 1913, contributing gazebo (c. 1910), pergola (c. 1910), and outhouse. Originally painter J.
