Korfball
Korfball ( nl, korfbal) is a ball sport, with similarities to netball and basketball. It is played by two teams of eight players with four female players and four male players in each team. The objective is to throw a ball into a netless basket that is mounted on a high pole. The sport was invented by Dutch school teacher Nico Broekhuysen in 1902. In the Netherlands there are approximately 500 clubs and more than 90,000 people playing korfball. The sport is also played in Belgium and Taiwan, and in nearly 70 other countries. History In 1902 Nico Broekhuysen, a Dutch school teacher from Amsterdam, was sent to Nääs, a town in Sweden, to follow an educational course about teaching gymnastics to children. This is where he was introduced to the Swedish game "ringboll". In ringboll one could score points by throwing the ball through a ring that was attached to a 3 m pole. Korfball World Championship
The IKF World Korfball Championship is an international korfball competition contested by the national teams of the members of International Korfball Federation (IKF), the sport's global governing body. The championship has been awarded roughly every four years since the inaugural tournament in 1978. The current champions are the Netherlands, who won the 2019 IKF World Korfball Championship. The current format of the tournament involves 20 teams competing for the title at venues within the host nation over a period of about a week. The 11 World Championships have been won by two different national teams. The Netherlands have won all but one time, losing only to Belgium in the 1991 Korfball World Championship. 2015 Korfball World Championship
The 10th IKF World Korfball Championship were held in the Belgian cities of Ghent, Tielen and Antwerp in 2015. Ghent and Tielen hosted the first and second round matches, whilst the placing matches and finals were all held in the Lotto Arena in Antwerp. This tournament also acts as the qualification tournament for Korfball at the World Games 2017. Seven teams will qualify for the World Games, including first all non-European teams finishing in the top 11. As such, at least one and maximum six non-European teams will qualify. Then, the remaining slots will be filled by the top European teams in this competition, with the exception of Poland which have already qualified as host country of the World Games 2017. The International Korfball Federation chose to award the hosting rights for the tournament to Belgium on 4 November 2011. Tielen is a village in the province of Antwerp in Flanders, Belgium. It is part of the municipality of Kasterlee. The nearest city is the neighbouring city of Turnhout. Originally 4 national teams were to compete until the withdrawal of Argentina (for financial reasons), so spare match fixtures were played against a second Brazil team, who played their matches out of the competition. 2018 Pan-American Korfball Championship
The Second Pan-American Korfball Championship was held in Colombia from 2 March 2018 to 4 March 2018, with 6 national teams in competition. The tournament also served as an American qualifier for the 2019 IKF World Korfball Championship, with the top two nations qualifying for the world championship. Brazil was the defending champion but had to settle for third as Suriname and Dominican Republic took the top two spots and qualified for the 2019 IKF World Korfball Championship. Results The six teams played a simple group stage tournament, with the top team crowned Pan-American champions.
