Biddeford is a city in York County, Maine, United States. It is the principal commercial center of York County. Its population was 22,552 at the 2020 census. The twin cities of Saco and Biddeford include the resort communities of Biddeford Pool and Fortunes Rocks. The town is the site of the University of New England and the annual La Kermesse Franco-Americaine Festival. First visited by Europeans in 1616, it is the site of one of the earliest European settlements in the United States. Biddeford is a principal population center of the Portland-South Portland-Biddeford metropolitan statistical area. Area code 207 is the sole telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the U.S. state of Maine. Area code 207 was created as one of the original North American area codes in 1947. Biddeford Pool
Biddeford Pool is a large tidal pool, located off Saco Bay south of the mouth of the Saco River on the south coast of Maine. It is approximately 6 miles southeast of downtown Biddeford, to which it is connected via State Route 208. The town of Kennebunkport is 3 miles southwest, connected via State Route 9. Background Biddeford Pool is the site of Maine's first recorded permanent settlement, then called Winter Harbor (not to be confused with present-day Winter Harbor, Maine). In the winter of 1616-1617, Richard Vines, a physician, resided here as part of the colonization efforts of Sir Ferdinando Gorges, lord proprietor of Maine. An early village developed on the north side. In 1688, Fort Mary was built near the pool's entrance. The former Fletcher's Neck Lifesaving Station, closed in 1971 and on the National Register of Historic Places, still stands at Ocean Avenue and Fourth Street. Alan Casavant
Alan M. Casavant (born July 26, 1952) is an American politician from Maine. Casavant, a Democrat, represented District 137 in the Maine House of Representatives from 2006 to 2014. District 137 comprised portions of Biddeford and Kennebunk. Casavant was unable to seek re-election in 2014 due to term-limits. Casavant is also the elected Mayor of Biddeford, holding that position since November 2011 when he defeated incumbent Mayor Joanne Twomey. His support grew in the 2017 election. He served as a Biddeford City Council member from 1976 to 1992. He retired as a teacher at Biddeford High School in 2012. Casavant earned a B.S.
