Balagolla ( si, බලගොල්ල, Balagolla, ta, பலகொல்ல, Palakolla) is a small village in Sri Lanka about away from the city of Kandy. Balagolla is located in Kandy District in Sri Lanka's Central Province. History Originally, Balagolla area was a coffee and cocoa plantation in the times of British occupation in Kandy. As a result of the construction of Victoria Dam under Accelerated Mahaweli Development Programme (AMDP), displaced people of Teldeniya and Kundasale were settled in Balagolla area in the early 1980s. Establishment This village was established in 1983 as a resettlement land for the families who lost their lands due to Mahaweli Development Scheme. Geography Balagolla is located in Dumbara Valley of Sri Lanka. In Sri Lanka, provinces ( si, පළාත, translit=Paḷāta; ta, மாகாணம், translit=Mākāṇam) are the first level administrative division. They were first established by the British rulers of Ceylon in 1833. Over the next century most of the administrative functions were transferred to the districts, the second level administrative division. Victoria Dam ( Sinhala: වික්ටෝරියා වේල්ල ''Viktoriya Vella'') is an arch dam located upstream of the Mahaweli River's mouth and from Teldeniya. It is named in honor of Her Majesty, Queen Victoria, Empress of the British Empire. Its main purposes are irrigation and hydroelectric power production. It is the tallest dam in Sri Lanka, and supports a power station, the largest hydroelectric power station in the country. The Mahaweli Development program ( si, මහවැලි සංවර්ධන වැඩසටහන) is known as the largest multipurpose national development program in the history of Sri Lanka and is also considered as the keystone of the government's development program that was initiated in 1961.
