Bobby Benson
Bernard Olabinjo "Bobby" Benson (11 April 1922 – 14 May 1983) was an entertainer and musician who had considerable influence on the Nigerian music scene, introducing big band and Caribbean idioms to the Highlife style of popular West African music. Life Bernard Olabinjo Benson was born on 11 April 1921 in Ikorodu, Lagos State, into an aristocratic family. His older brother T. O. S. Benson (1917–2008) would become a successful politician. While at secondary school he also learned tailoring, but after leaving school he became a boxer for a brief period, and then a sailor in the Merchant Navy. In 1944, he left his ship in London, where he made his entertainment debut with the Negro Ballet, touring several European capitals. He met his senior wife, Cassandra (half-Scottish and half-Caribbean in origin), while in Britain, and upon returning to Nigeria in 1947, they established the Bobby Benson and Cassandra Theatrical Party. Ikorodu
Ikorodu is a city in Lagos State, Nigeria. It is located to the north-east of Lagos, along the Lagos Lagoon and shares boundary with Ogun State. With a population of over 1 million inhabitants, Ikorodu is currently the 12th largest city in Nigeria and growing at a rate of 5.26% annually, it is projected to reach 1.7 million inhabitants by 2035, It is the 2nd largest local government in Lagos State. Jùjú Music
Jùjú is a style of Yoruba popular music, originated in Lagos, Nigeria. It first began developing in the 1920s with Tunde King (Abdulrafiu Babatunde King). Early styles of jùjú music consisted of banjo or acoustic guitar, drums, gourd rattle, tambourine, and vocals. Call-and-response singing is common in jùjú music along with harmonies, repetitive refrains, and Polyrhythm, polyrhythmic percussion. Other musical elements like improvisation and expressive vocal styles are often found. Although jùjú music was developing in the 1920s, a recognizable genre did not emerge until the mid-1930s. Jùjú music emerged in Lagos in 1932, and was influenced by palm wine guitar music. Jùjú was also strongly influenced by Asikò dance drumming, which is tied to Yoruba people, Yoruba Christianity, Christian communities.
