''Blood and Sand'' is a play in four acts by Tom Cushing. It is based on Vicente Blasco Ibáñez's 1908 Spanish-language novel '' Blood and Sand'' (English: ''Sangre y arena'').Mantle, p. 422 Both the novel and Cushing's play were the basis for the 1922 silent film '' Blood and Sand'' starring Rudolph Valentino. Tom Cushing
Charles Cyprian Strong Cushing (October 27, 1879 – March 6, 1941) was an American playwright who wrote under the name Tom Cushing. Biography Cushing was born in New Haven, Connecticut, the son of William Lee Cushing, founder and headmaster of the Westminster School in Simsbury, Connecticut, and Mary Lewis Strong Cushing. His aunt was mathematics professor Eleanor P. Cushing. He attended Westminster and later Yale University, where he was a member of Skull and Bones. He graduated in 1902. He was a tutor in the English Sudan in 1903 and a teacher of English and Greek at Westminster from 1909 to 1917. During World War II, he served in France in the entertainment division of the YMCA. Cushing died at Baker Memorial Hospital in Boston following an operation for a brain tumor. Romaine Callender
Alfred Romaine Callender (February17, 1883February5, 1976) was an English born American actor of stage and screen. He should not be confused with several other men in his family also known publicly as Romaine Callendar, including his father, the stage actor Edwin Romaine Callendar (1845-1922), and his uncle, the music educator, conductor, composer, organ builder, and book author William Romaine Callender (1859-1930). Callender began his career as a stage actor in 1906 performing with Robert B. Mantell's Shakespeare company. He had a prolific career as an actor on Broadway from 1910 through 1935. He simultaneously worked periodically in film; making his screen debut in the silent film ''My Wife'' in 1918.
