Balga, Western Australia
Balga is a suburb of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia, north of Perth city's central business district (CBD). Its local government area is the City of Stirling. Mark Irwin is the current mayor. The name "Balga" was adopted in 1954 and is the Noongar ( Aboriginal) word for the indigenous grass tree ''Xanthorrhoea preissii''. It was designed by the State Housing Commission along with Nollamara and Westminster as part of the "Mirrabooka Project", and the laying of streets and building of homes commenced in the 1960s. Geography Balga is north of Perth, and is bounded by Wanneroo Road to the west, Reid Highway to the south, Mirrabooka Avenue to the east and Beach Road to the north. City Of Stirling
The City of Stirling is a local government area in the northern suburbs of the Western Australian capital city of Perth about north of Perth's central business district. The City covers an area of and has a population of over 223,000, making it the largest local government area by population in Western Australia. History Stirling was established on 24 January 1871 as the Perth Road District under the ''District Roads Act 1871''. The district at that time included what are now the Cities of Wanneroo, Joondalup, Bayswater and Belmont. With the passage of the ''Local Government Act 1960'', which reformed all road districts into shires, it became the Shire of Perth on 1 July 1961. Wanneroo Road
Wanneroo Road is a arterial highway in the northern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia linking Joondanna and Yokine in the south with Wanneroo and Yanchep in the north. As part of State Route 60, it begins from Charles Street in the inner city and becomes Indian Ocean Drive up to Dongara. Originally a narrow and often country road with a single lane in each direction it has been periodically widened and (particularly north of Wanneroo) straightened. Around the Carabooda area the road has been realigned. Short sections of the original, narrow road remain providing access to properties and businesses along the road. The road is also multiplexed with State Routes 81 and 83 for short lengths. Mirrabooka bus station is a Transperth bus station in Mirrabooka, Western Australia, Mirrabooka approximately 12 kilometres north of Perth, Western Australia. Path Transit is an Australian bus company operating Transperth bus services under contract to the Public Transport Authority. It is a subsidiary of Keolis Downer. History On 29 September 1996, Path Transit commenced operating services in the Marmion and Wanneroo areas from depots in Joondalup and Karrinyup with 191 Mercedes-Benz and Renault buses. Transperth
Transperth is the public transport system for Perth and surrounding areas in Western Australia. It is managed by the Public Transport Authority (PTA), a state government organisation, and consists of train, bus and ferry services. Bus operations are contracted out to Swan Transit, Path Transit and Transdev. Ferry operations are contracted out to Captain Cook Cruises. Train operations are done by the PTA through their Transperth Train Operations division. The Transperth train system consists of eight lines: the Airport, Armadale, Ellenbrook, Fremantle, Mandurah, Midland, Thornlie–Cockburn, and Yanchep lines; and 85 stations. Polytechnic West (formerly Swan TAFE) was a State Training Provider established under section 35 of the Vocational Education and Training Act 1996 (WA) based in Perth, Western Australia. Polytechnic West is one of the largest training providers in the state and teaches and instructs in a range of areas from trade-based apprenticeships to business and finance to aviation across its eight campuses in Bentley, Carlisle, Midland, Thornlie, Balga, Jandakot and two Armadale campuses. Balga Senior High School
Balga Senior High School is a public co-educational high day school, located on Markham Way in the suburb of Balga, north of Perth, Western Australia. Established in 1970, the school caters for students from Year 7 to Year 12. Overview A fire was deliberately lit at the school in 2002 causing $200,000 worth of damage. Merv Hammond, the school principal from 1995 to 2006, was named Principal of the Year by the then education minister Alan Carpenter in 2002. Hammond later retired in 2006 following charges of 15 counts of corruption of A$400,000 of funds being embezzled in companies associated with the Balga Works Program for disadvantaged youth.
