Azja
Azja (also Azja, son of Tuhaj-Bej) is a fictional character in the novel ''Fire in the Steppe'' by Henryk Sienkiewicz. He is an antagonist and the rival of Michał Wołodyjowski. He's a Tartars, Tatar who wants to kidnap Barbara Jeziorkowska, settle some Crimean Tatars on the uninhabited regions of Ukraine to protect Poland's borders (like Zaporozhian Cossacks) and become a "Tatar hetman" in the service of the Polish Crown. Although Azja is a fictional character, his father is a historical figure. In Jerzy Hoffman, Jerzy Hoffman's Fire in the Steppe (film), 1969 film adaptation, Azja is portrayed by Daniel Olbrychski. Barbara Jeziorkowska
Barbara (Baśka) Jeziorkowska (later Wołodyjowska) is a fictional character of the novel ''Fire in the Steppe'' by Henryk Sienkiewicz. She is the main female protagonist, an orphan who marries Michał Wołodyjowski. In Jerzy Hoffman, Jerzy Hoffman's Fire in the Steppe (film), 1969 film adaptation, Barbara is portrayed by Magdalena Zawadzka. Story Date of Barbara Jeziorkowska's birth is unknown. At the beginning of the novel she was probably about 18 years old. Barbara was an orphan in the care of stolnik Makowiecki, Michał Wołodyjowski, Michał Wołodyjowski's brother-in-law. The film is based on the novel ''Pan Wołodyjowski'', by the Polish writer and Nobel laureate Henryk Sienkiewicz. The film was also serialized on Polish television, as ''The Adventures of Sir Michael'' (Polish: ''Przygody pana Michała''). Mirza Tughai Bey, Tuhay Bey ( crh, Toğay bey; pl, Tuhaj-bej; Cyrillic: ''Тугай-бей'') sometimes also spelled as Togay Bey (died June 1651) was a notable military leader and politician of the Crimean Tatars. Biography Toğay descended from the Arğıns - one of noble Crimean families, and his full name is ''Arğın Doğan Toğay bey'' (Arhyn Dohan Tohai bei). " Bey" is actually a title, which he received on becoming the chief of Or Qapı (Perekop) '' sanjak'', an important position in the Crimean Khanate, since the Isthmus of Perekop is the neck to Crimean Peninsula and was crucial to its defense. Daniel Marcel Olbrychski (; born 27 February 1945) is a Polish film and theatre actor who is widely considered one of the greatest Polish actors of his generation. He appeared in 180 films and TV productions and is best known for leading roles in several Andrzej Wajda movies including '' The Promised Land'' and also known for playing a defector and spymaster Vassily Orlov alongside Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie in the movie ''Salt''. Henryk Adam Aleksander Pius Sienkiewicz ( , ; 5 May 1846 – 15 November 1916), also known by the pseudonym Litwos (), was a Polish writer, novelist, journalist and Nobel Prize laureate. ( uk, гетьман, translit=het'man) is a political title from Central and Eastern Europe, historically assigned to military commanders. Used by the Czechs in Bohemia since the 15th century. It was the title of the second-highest military commander in the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania from the 16th to 18th centuries. Jerzy Julian Hoffman (; born 15 March 1932) is a Polish director, screenwriter, and producer. He received the Polish Academy Life Achievement Award in February 2006.
