Midland Railway Station, Perth
Midland railway station is the terminus of the Midland line in Perth. Western Australia. It is operated by Transperth and is connected with the feeder bus services that utilise the adjacent bus terminal in Midland. History Midland station was opened on 8 October 1968 by Minister for Transport & Railways Ray O'Connor as a replacement for Midland Junction station when the main Eastern Railway was being converted to dual gauge. It originally had four narrow gauge platform faces, three terminating and one through. A separate platform was provided for the standard gauge line 150 metres away. One of the terminating lines was lifted in the 1990s and in February 2001, the through line converted to dual gauge allowing ''The Prospector'' to call at the main station. Toodyay Railway Station
Toodyay railway station is located on the Eastern Railway in the Avon River town of Toodyay in Western Australia. History There have been three stopping places for railway passengers in Toodyay. As was the case with other communities in Western Australia at the time, railway routes through established localities caused concern to the residents when the railway lines were in planning stages. Original stopping point The original railway stopping point on the narrow gauge Clackline–Miling line was where a railway platform is indicated on the north side of the track on the Public Works Department plan for that time. Original station The locality at that time was known as Newcastle; by 1897 the station building was constructed within a short distance west of the original terminus, and was referred to regularly in advertising as being across the road from the Newcastle Hotel. Transwa is Western Australia's regional public transport provider, linking 240 destinations, from Kalbarri in the north to Augusta in the south west to Esperance in the south east. The Transwa system provides transport to the major regional centres of Bunbury, Kalgoorlie, Northam, Geraldton and Albany. WAGR WCA/WCE Class
The WAGR WCA class railcars and WCE class trailers were built by Comeng, Granville for the Western Australian Government Railways in 1971 to operate the new '' Prospector'' service between East Perth and Kalgoorlie. At the time of their construction the WCA class units were the longest and fastest diesel railcars in the world. Merredin Railway Station
Merredin railway station is located on the Eastern Goldfields Railway in Western Australia. It is in the town of Merredin. History The original Merredin station opened in 1895. It was an important station on the Eastern Goldfields Railway, being the junction station for a number of lines to locations in the Wheatbelt and Goldfields regions. The main eastern railway connected with Northam to the west, and to Southern Cross to the east. The narrow gauge lines that connected with Merredin were: * from the western end of the station, Bruce Rock to the south (for a line to Narrogin) * from the north of the station area, Nungarin (to Wyalkatchem) to the north * from the east of the station area, Kondinin to the south (for a line to Narrogin) When the main eastern railway line was converted to standard gauge in the late 1960s, a new station was built diagonally opposite. Midland Railway Line, Perth
The Midland line is a suburban rail service on the Transperth network in Perth, Western Australia. It runs on the Eastern Railway through Perth's eastern suburbs and connects Midland with Perth. Travelling from Midland, the trains terminate at Fremantle on the Fremantle line. History The section of the Eastern Railway between Fremantle, Perth and Guildford was the first suburban railway line in Perth, opening on 1 March 1881. The line was extended from Guildford to Chidlow's Well, opening in March 1884. Throughout the 1880s, the Eastern Railway line was extended beyond Guildford and Midland Junction along its first route to Chidlow and Northam. The Eastern Railway is the main railway route between Fremantle and Northam in Western Australia. It opened in stages between 1881 and 1893. The line continues east to Kalgoorlie as the Eastern Goldfields Railway. Initial section The first sod of the Fremantle-Guildford Railway was turned by Governor Ord at Guildford on 3 June 1879. The event coincided with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of settlement of Western Australia. The alignment of this first section of the railway has remained generally unchanged since it opened on 1 March 1881 and now forms part of Transperth's Fremantle Line and Midland Line. ''The Prospector'' is a rural passenger train service in Western Australia operated by Transwa between East Perth and Kalgoorlie. On this service, two trains depart almost at the same time in opposite directions, one travelling between East Perth and Kalgoorlie, and the other between Kalgoorlie and East Perth. The original vehicles ordered in 1968 for trains providing this service were replaced in 2004 with vehicles capable of reducing journey times to 6 hours 45 minutes. History With the standard gauge line from Perth to Kalgoorlie due to open in mid-1969, the Western Australian Government Railways decided to replace '' The Kalgoorlie'' overnight sleeper service with a daylight service.
