Anne M. Squire
Anne Marguerite Squire née Park (1921–2017), 31st Moderator of the United Church of Canada from 1986 to 1988, was the first female lay person elected to that post. Her time as Moderator was marked by controversy over the question of whether members of the LGBTQ community should be ordained. Early life Anne Park was born in Amherstburg, Ontario to a Methodist mother and Anglican father. After graduating from high school in 1938, she became a public school teacher. She met Bill Squire at a Hallowe'en dance, and they were married in 1943. She left teaching in 1945 to raise a family, and became a Sunday School teacher. Moderator After her children were grown up, Squire enrolled at Carleton University in Ottawa and received her B.A. in 1974, and an M.A. in Religion in 1975. Moderator Of The United Church Of Canada
The Moderator of the United Church of Canada is the most senior elected official within the United Church of Canada. He or she may be a lay person or a member of the Order of Ministry and is elected to a three-year term by commissioners attending the church's triannual General Council. The current Moderator is the Right Reverend Dr. Carmen Lansdowne, who was elected to the office at the 44th General Council in July 2022, and installed on August 7, 2022. Role The Moderator's authority exists by his or her ability to influence the direction of the denomination, rather than any sort of direct power to unilaterally enact changes. Sang Chul Lee
Sang Chul Lee (February 29, 1924 – January 28, 2017) was the 32nd Moderator of the United Church of Canada and the first person of Asian descent to hold the position. He was elected by the 32nd General Council of the United Church of Canada at their meeting in Victoria, British Columbia. He was married and had three daughters. Early life Lee was born in 1924 to Korean immigrant parents in Siberia during the reign of Joseph Stalin. At the age of seven, his family moved to Japanese-occupied Manchuria, where he attended a mission high school operated by Canadian missionaries, and against the wishes of his parents - who were devout Shamans - he converted to Christianity. After World War II, Lee moved to South Korea. Lee saw Christianity as a way to cope with the brutality he had experienced in both Manchuria and Korea and was particularly enthralled with the Exodus story of Moses and the Israelites. Carleton University
Carleton University is an English-language public research university in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Founded in 1942 as Carleton College, the institution originally operated as a private, non-denominational evening college to serve returning World War II veterans. Homosexuality And The United Church Of Canada
Although the United Church of Canada is one of the few mainstream Christian denominations to both ordain LGBTQ clergy and consecrate same-sex marriages, support for these issues have caused deep divisions within the church. LGBTQ clergy At the time of its inception in 1925, the United Church of Canada considered homosexuality a sin, and openly LGBTQ persons were rejected as candidates for ministry. Robert Baird "Bob" McClure OOnt FRCS (Edin.) FICS (November 23, 1900 – November 10, 1991) was a Canadian physician, medical missionary to China, Taiwan, Gaza, India, and Borneo, and the 23rd Moderator of the United Church of Canada, the first unordained lay person to hold that position. Early life Robert McClure's father, Dr. William McClure, was born in Lachute, Quebec, and earned a medical degree under William Osler at McGill University. William's wife, Margaret (nee Baird) McClure, was born in Pennsylvania. Together, the two became missionaries at a Presbyterian mission in Wuhan, China in 1888.
