Alex McCarthy (baseball)
Alexander George McCarthy) (May 12, 1889 - March 12, 1978) was a professional baseball infielder. He played all or part of eight seasons in Major League Baseball from 1910 to 1917. He played over 100 games each as a second baseman, shortstop and third baseman. Professional baseball career In 1910, McCarthy was purchased by the Pittsburgh Pirates from the South Bend Bronchos of the Central League. He played with the Pirates until 1915, when he was purchased by the Chicago Cubs. The following year, he returned to Pittsburgh when the Pirates purchased him from the Cubs. In 1918, McCarthy was traded to the Kansas City Blues of the American Association to complete a deal that included Fritz Mollwitz. McCarthy continued to play in the minor leagues until 1927. He served as player-manager of the Blues in 1920, and of the Springfield Senators of the Illinois–Indiana–Iowa League in 1926-27. An infielder is a baseball player stationed at one of four defensive "infield" positions on the baseball field. Standard arrangement of positions In a game of baseball, two teams of nine players take turns playing offensive and defensive roles. Although there are many rules to baseball, in general the team playing offense tries to score runs by batting balls into the field that enable runners to make a complete circuit of the four bases. The team playing in the field tries to prevent runs by catching the ball before it hits the ground, by tagging runners with the ball while they are not touching a base, or by throwing the ball to first base before the batter who hit the ball can run from home plate to first base. Fritz Mollwitz
Frederick August "Fritz" Mollwitz (June 16, 1890 – October 3, 1967) was a German–American first baseman who played in Major League Baseball. Mollwitz was drafted in 1913 by the Chicago Cubs from the minor leagues, where he had been playing in the Wisconsin-Illinois League. He would play with the Cubs beginning that season and into the next season until he was traded to the Cincinnati Reds for Claud Derrick. In 1916, he would return to Chicago when the Cubs purchased him from the Reds. The following year, Mollwitz returned to the minor leagues when he was purchased by the Kansas City Blues of the American Association from the Cubs. Later that year, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates along with a player to be named later for players to be named later. Eventually, Roy Sanders was sent to Pittsburgh and Alex McCarthy, Ray Miller and Ike McAuley were sent to Kansas City to complete the trade. Illinois–Indiana–Iowa League
The Illinois–Indiana–Iowa League was a Minor League Baseball organization that operated for the better part of 60 seasons, with teams based in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and Wisconsin. The league began play in 1901 and disbanded after the 1961 season. It was popularly known as the Three–I League and sometimes as the Three–Eye League. The Illinois–Indiana–Iowa League played from 1901 to 1961 with some interruptions due to world events: the league did not play in 1918 due to World War I and it had a break in 1933 and 1934 because of the Great Depression.
