242nd Infantry Regiment (United States)
The 242nd Infantry Regiment was a formation of the United States Army. Organized as part of the 42nd Infantry Division during World War II, the regiment took part in fighting against the Germans and performed post-war occupation duty in Austria. The 242nd Infantry's most notable member was Vito R. Bertoldo, who received the Medal of Honor for heroism in combat near Hatten, France, in January 1945. Formation In June 1943, the United States Department of War issued orders reactivating the 42nd Infantry Division for service in World War II. The division's task organization included the 222nd, 232nd, and 242nd Infantry Regiments. The cadre of experienced officers and noncommissioned officers around which the 242nd Infantry formed had recently returned from overseas service in Hawaii and Newfoundland, and assembled at Fort Benning, Georgia and Camp Maxey, Texas prior to relocating to Camp Gruber, Oklahoma. VI Corps (United States)
The VI Corps was activated as VI Army Corps in August 1918 at Neufchâteau, France, serving in the Lorraine Campaign. Constituted in the Organized Reserves in 1921, it was allotted to the Regular Army in 1933 and activated on 1 August 1940 at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. Seventh United States Army
The Seventh Army was a United States army created during World War II that evolved into the United States Army Europe (USAREUR) during the 1950s and 1960s. It served in North Africa and Italy in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations and France and Germany in the European Theater between 1942 and 1945. Originally the I Armored Corps under command of Lieutenant General George S. Patton, it made landfall at Morocco during Operation Torch as the Western Task Force, the first all-U.S. force to enter the European war. In the United States Armed Forces, a brigadier general is a one-star general officer in the United States Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Space Force. A brigadier general ranks above a colonel and below a major general. The pay grade of brigadier general is O-7. Henning Linden
Brigadier General Henning Linden (September 3, 1892 – March 15, 1984) was a United States Army officer who served in World War II. He was notable for his role in the liberation of the Dachau concentration camp while serving as assistant division commander (ADC) of the 42nd Infantry Division. Early life Henning Linden was born as Carl Henning Linden in Mound, Minnesota on September 3, 1892, to Swedish immigrant parents Charles A. Linden and Mary (Seaquist) Linden. He graduated from South High School in Minneapolis in 1912. Linden completed the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program at the University of Minnesota and was a cadet captain, graduating in 1917 with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering. Camp Maxey is a Texas Army National Guard training facility that was originally built as a U.S. Army infantry-training camp during World War II. It was occupied from July 1942 to early 1946 in Lamar County, Texas. Its main entrance was located nine miles north of Paris, Texas. Planning for the 70,000-acre military post began in 1940, soon after the National Military Draft was ordered; the planning accelerated in 1941 shortly before the United States entered World War II in December 1941. On 1 May 1941, an engineering contract to design a $22,800,000 military camp in northwest Lamar County was awarded to a Dallas firm.
