The 2017 Sydney Sevens was the fourteenth edition of the Australian Sevens tournament, the second of which to be held in Sydney, and the fourth tournament of the 2016–17 World Rugby Sevens Series. The tournament was played on 4–5 February 2017 at Allianz Stadium in Sydney, Australia. Format The teams were drawn into four pools of four teams each. Each team played all the others in their pool once. The top two teams from each pool advanced to the Cup quarter finals. The bottom two teams from each group advanced to the Challenge Trophy quarter finals. 2016–17 World Rugby Sevens Series
The 2016–17 World Rugby Sevens Series, known for sponsorship reasons as the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, was the 18th annual series of rugby sevens tournaments for national rugby sevens teams. The Sevens Series has been run by World Rugby since 1999–2000. South Africa won the Series with a comfortable 28-point margin over England; South Africa won five of the ten tournaments. The 2016–17 Series also served as a qualifying tournament for the 2018 Rugby World Cup Sevens. Nine of the core teams had already qualified but the four highest-placed finishers from among the remaining six core teams also gained qualification for the 2018 RWC Sevens. The 2016 Sydney Sevens was the fourth tournament of the 2015–16 World Rugby Sevens Series, held over the weekend of 6–7 February 2016 at Sydney Football Stadium in Sydney, Australia. It was the thirteenth edition of the Australian Sevens tournament. The Cup final was won by New Zealand, defeating Australia by 27–24 in front of a sold-out crowd of over 37,000 fans. Fiji defeated South Africa in the third place play-off. Format The teams were divided into pools of four teams each, and a round-robin played within each pool. The Australia Sevens is an international rugby sevens tournament that was first played in 1986. Currently hosted as the Sydney Sevens, the event is part of the World Rugby Sevens Series. Sydney Football Stadium
The Sydney Football Stadium, commercially known as Allianz Stadium and previously Aussie Stadium, was a football stadium in Moore Park, Sydney, Australia. The 2016 Oceania Sevens Championship was the ninth Oceania Sevens in men's rugby sevens. It was held at ANZ Stadium in Suva, Fiji. The host nation Fiji won the tournament, defeating Samoa 28–19 in the final. It was the inaugural edition of the Australian Women's Sevens and part of the World Rugby Women's Sevens Series.
