2015 European Games
The 1st European Games (), also known as the 2015 European Games or Baku 2015 (), were the inaugural edition of the European Games, an international multi-sport event for athletes representing the National Olympic Committees (NOCs) of the European Olympic Committees. It took place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 12 to 28 June 2015, and featured almost 6,000 athletes from 50 countries competing in 30 sports, including 15 summer Olympic and 2 non-Olympic sports. Host selection Baku was awarded the right to host the first European Games at the 41st EOC General Assembly in Rome, on 8 December 2012. The European Games will take place every four years thereafter, with the next competition held in 2019. The decision was made as a result of secret balloting, where of 48 votes, 38 were in favour of the sole bidder for the event. Eight votes were against, and two more abstained from voting. Simon Clegg
Simon Paul Clegg CBE (born 11 August 1959) is a British sports businessmen. He has been Chief Executive of the British Olympic Association, a Championship Football Club, Ipswich Town FC and a European Youth Olympic Festival. He was Chief Operating Officer of the inaugural 2015 European Games in Baku and also managed the British Biathlon Team and Team GB athletes at twelve Summer and Winter Olympic Games. In addition he orchestrated the national political and PR campaigns to persuade the Government and Mayor of London to bid for the 2012 Olympic Games. Early life Simon Clegg was born in Harlington, Middlesex and grew up in Godalming, Surrey and attended Stowe School in Buckingham. He spent two years as a trainee Quantity surveyor in Guildford and joined the Parachute Regiment as a territorial soldier. Heydar Aliyev Sports And Exhibition Complex
The Heydar Aliyev Sports and Exhibition Complex is the main exhibition space of Baku, Azerbaijan. Named after the former President Heydar Aliyev's cult of personality, Heydar Aliyev), it is located on Tbilisi Avenue between Hyatt Hotel and Grand Hotel Europe. Since its opening in 1990, it held about 40 international competitions in different kinds of sports. The facility seats 8,000 people and being the largest sports facility in Azerbaijan, the complex offers all the necessary conditions for major international competitions. History The construction of the building started in 1977 but was not completed until 1989. Tofiq Bahramov Stadium
The Tofiq Bahramov Republican Stadium () is a multi-purpose stadium in Baku, Azerbaijan. It is currently used mostly for football matches. It served as the home ground for the Azerbaijan national football team until they moved to the Baku Olympic Stadium. It holds 31,200 seats making it the second largest stadium in the country. The stadium is also used by the Azerbaijan Premier League clubs in the final rounds of European competitions. History The Tofiq Bahramov Republican Stadium was built in 1951. Baku Sports Palace (also known as Baku Sport Hall) is an indoor arena located in Baku, Azerbaijan. Originally, the arena is named as Palace of Hand Games () until 2015. It is located near the Baku Boulevard on the Caspian Sea coast. It was built in 1974 and was renovated in 2015. The palace consists of 1736 seats. Baku Crystal Hall
Baku Crystal Hall ( Azerbaijani: ''Bakı Kristal Zalı'') is an indoor arena in Baku, Azerbaijan. It is located on the coast of Baku near National Flag Square. Construction of the arena began in August 2011 and finished in April 2012in time for it to host its first major event, the Eurovision Song Contest 2012. History Baku Crystal Hall was built in order to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2012. On 2 August 2011, the main agreement was signed with Alpine Bau Deutschland AG to construct the venue and preparations for construction had been started in the area. Baku Aquatics Centre
The Aquatic Palace is a sporting venue in Baku, Azerbaijan, which is fully compliant with the requirements of the International Swimming Federation (FINA). The Palace hosted the Baku 2015 European Games and Baku 2017 4th Islamic Solidarity Games. The Aquatic Palace has three swimming pools. One pool is an Olympic-size swimming pool and was designed for different types of competitions at local and international levels. Baku Olympic Stadium () is a stadium, designed and constructed to meet the international standards for stadiums set by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) and the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). Athletes Village, Baku
The Athletes Village (), or Olympic Village (), is a residential area in Baku, Azerbaijan. Although it was initially constructed as a residential area, after its opening, it served as an athletes' village, dedicated for 2015 European Games and 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games. History It is located in the Nizami District, in the north-western part of Baku, in front of the Olympic Stadium, which was the main arena for the event. National Gymnastics Arena is also located on the opposite side of the road going to Olympic Village. It consists of 13 10–16-storey apartment buildings and one administrative building.
