The 1983 Louis Vuitton Cup was held in Newport, Rhode Island, United States in 1983. The winner, Australia II, went on to challenge for the 1983 America's Cup. The teams Australia II (AUS) Owned by Alan Bond and helmed by John Bertrand, ''Australia II'' featured an innovative winged keel design developed by Ben Lexcen which helped to make it point higher, sail faster and be quicker in coming about. The boat was innovative in a number of ways, but the winged keel was the most striking design advance and the distinguishing feature of the boat. The New York Yacht Club challenged the legality of the keel design, but it was ruled to be legal. ''Australia II'' dominated the Louis Vuitton Cup and took the trophy, earning the right to compete in the 1983 America's Cup. Yacht Club Costa Smeralda
Yacht Club Costa Smeralda was established by the Aga Khan in 1967. It is situated at Porto Cervo in Costa Smeralda, northern Sardinia and provides services for recreational sailors. The club challenged for the 1983 America's Cup with '' Azzurra'' in Newport, Rhode Island, coming third. The winged keel is a sailboat keel layout first fitted on the 12-metre class yacht '' Australia II'', 1983 America's Cup winner. Design This layout was adopted by Ben Lexcen, designer of '' Australia II''. Alan Bond (22 April 1938 – 5 June 2015) was an English-born Australian businessman noted for his high-profile and often corrupt business dealings. These included his central role in the WA Inc scandals of the 1980s; the biggest corporate collapse in Australian history; and also his criminal conviction that saw him serve four years in prison. He is also remembered for bankrolling the successful challenge for the 1983 America's Cup, the first time the New York Yacht Club had lost it in its 132-year history. Iain Murray (born 14 April 1958) is an Australian sailor and yacht designer Murray is known for his success in the 18 ft skiff class, appearances in 12-Metre Class yachts in the 1983 and 1987 America's Cup regattas, innovation in yacht design, management of the 2013 and 2017 America's Cup and global SailGP and for winning a second World Championship in the Etchells class 35 years after the first. The Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron (RSYS) is a yacht club located in North Sydney, Australia in the suburb of Kirribilli. The squadron was founded in 1862. Terence McLaughlin (born 1956) is a Canadian sailor and Olympics silver medallist. Biography McLaughlin was born July 24, 1956, in Toronto, Ontario to Paul McLaughlin and his wife Mary. His father competed in the 1948 Olympic dinghy regatta. He attended St. Michael's College School and then majored in economics at Queen's University. In 1980 McLaughlin and his crew Evert Bastet won the 1980 World Championship in the Flying Dutchman class. Bruno Trouble (born 29 May 1945) is a French sailor who competed in the 1968 Summer Olympics and in the 1976 Summer Olympics. He raced a Flying Dutchman at the 1968 Olympics, finishing sixth, and a Soling keelboat at the 1976 Olympics, finishing seventh.
