1981 CFL Season
The 1981 CFL season is considered to be the 28th season in modern-day Canadian football, although it is officially the 24th Canadian Football League season. CFL News in 1981 The Eastern and Western Football Conferences, which had carried on as separate and autonomous entities since the founding of the CFL in 1958, agreed to a full merger prior to the start of the 1981 season. With the merger, the Eastern and Western Football Conferences were dissolved and renamed as the East and West Divisions. The merger authorized the CFL to have full authority over decisions, including the adoption of a full interlocking schedule for both divisions. All nine teams played each other twice, once home and once away, regardless of their affiliated division. Ottawa Rough Riders
The Ottawa Rough Riders were a Canadian Football League team based in Ottawa, Ontario, founded on September 19, 1876. Formerly one of the oldest and longest-lived professional sports teams in North America, the Rough Riders won the Grey Cup championship nine times. Their most dominant era was the 1960s and 1970s, in which they won five Grey Cups. The team's fortunes waned in the 1980s and 1990s, and they ultimately ceased operations following the 1996 CFL season, 1996 season. Five years later, a new CFL team known as the Ottawa Renegades was founded, though they suspended operations in 2006. The Ottawa Redblacks, which own the Rough Riders and Renegades intellectual properties, joined the league in 2014. CFL West Division
The West Division is one of the two regional divisions of the Canadian Football League (CFL), its counterpart being the East Division (CFL), East Division. With a few exceptions, a senior men's football championship has been contested in Western Canada since 1911, and with a few additional exceptions the Western champion has played the Eastern champion for the Grey Cup. Although its teams have been members of the CFL since 1958, the then-Western Football Conference remained a distinct legal entity until 1981. The five teams in the West Division are the BC Lions, Calgary Stampeders, Edmonton Elks, Saskatchewan Roughriders, and Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Grey Cup's Most Valuable Canadian
The Dick Suderman Trophy () for the Grey Cup's Most Valuable Canadian is awarded annually to the Canadian player deemed to have the best performance in the Grey Cup game, the championship of the Canadian Football League. This award is presented before the Grey Cup trophy is presented. The winner does not necessarily have to play for the Grey Cup winning team in order to qualify. The award was introduced at the 1971 Grey Cup, and the first winner was Dick Suderman, a Canadian defensive end. A year later, just six weeks before the playing of the 1972 Grey Cup, Suderman collapsed and died from a brain hemorrhage after playing a regular season game; the trophy was subsequently renamed in his honour. Neil Lumsden
Neil James Lumsden (born December 19, 1952) is a Canadian politician and retired professional football player. Lumsden was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in the 2022 provincial election. He serves as Minister of Sport. Lumsden played his entire professional career in the Canadian Football League (CFL), mostly as a fullback and also as a running back for the Toronto Argonauts, Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Edmonton Eskimos from 1976 to 1985. John Glassford (Canadian Football)
John Glassford is a former award-winning linebacker in the Canadian Football League playing 6 seasons with the Ottawa Rough Riders. A graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University, Glassford played on the Golden Hawks' Yates Cup winning team in 1973. He joined Ottawa in 1977 and played 96 games, never missing a regular season game. In 1981 he played in the classic Grey Cup game, a Rider last second loss to the Edmonton Eskimos and was named Grey Cup Most Valuable Player. In 1981 he had one QB sack, a pass reception for 5 yards and a 2-point convert. He intercepted 2 passes in 1982. He was inducted into the ''Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawk Hall of Fame'' in 1991. He now owns Glassford Chrysler in Ingersoll, Ontario. |

Dave Cutler (Canadian Football)
David Robert Stuart Cutler (born October 17, 1945) is a former all-star place kicker with the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League (CFL). Cutler is considered by many to be the best field goal kicker in CFL history. CFL A graduate of Simon Fraser University, and playing his entire 16-year career with the Eskimos, Cutler is the team's all time point scorer, with 2237. He was an all star 4 times and was a member of 6 Grey Cup winning teams, including being an essential part of their great 5 win (1978–1982) dynasty.
